How to Customize the Dock on Mac

The dock in OS X is one of the best features of your Mac. Here’s how to customize it and get the most out of it.

The OS X dock is located below the screen and contains a handful of Mac apps you use most often (or at least should have). It also houses the Finder icon to open a Finder window as well as your trash. The Dock also stores minimized windows from any app you have open.

In a way it is similar to the taskbar in Windows, but there are some key differences that set it apart from the rest.

If you want to take your Dock to the next level and get the most out of it, there are lots of things you can do to customize it and make it your own. After all, it’s your Mac, so you should customize it and set it up the way you want.

Here are some ways to customize the dock on your Mac.

Add and Remove App Icons

By default, when you first get your new Mac, the dock will be stocked with all sorts of stock Apple apps, and when you install more of your own apps that you love to use, you’ll want to put them in your dock, too.

It’s really easy to add or remove app icons from the Dock. To remove an icon, simply click and drag an icon out of the slot, then release. It will still install on your Mac and you can still access it from the Applications folder or the Launchpad, but not from the dock.

To add an app to your dock, you can go to your Applications folder and click and drag an app to your dock and then drop it. This will not transfer the app to your dock as it will still remain in the Applications folder.

Edit App Icons

After adding and removing the apps you want from your Dock, you can rearrange them as you wish.
