How to Customize Control Center Items in macOS Big Sur

The all-new Control Center has made it much easier to take control of commonly used features in macOS Big Sur, such as AirDrop, AirPlay, and even Accessibility Shortcuts. Depending on what works with your workflow, you can customize the Control Center on your Mac to keep only the useful items and remove the unnecessary ones. For added flexibility, you can even pin Control Center items to the menu bar in macOS Big Sur for quick access to certain controls. Let me take you through the whole process!

Although I always find the menu bar very user-friendly for accessing frequently used items, I often find it missing for a few main reasons. First, it doesn’t have much space to combine many items. The other doesn’t offer much scope for customization. That’s why I’m glad to see an iOS-style Control Center on macOS.

The control center may contain several controls. You can do things like quickly enable/disable dark mode, take control of Accessibility Shortcuts, and even switch users directly from the Control Center. 1. click on Control Center icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

2. Now, Control Center panel It opens with multiple items including Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb, AirDrop, Keyboard Brightness, AirPlay Display, Sound, and more. Select a specific item and then release to the desired location in the menu bar.

Note: You can also use the Command key (⌘) to adjust the menu bar items on your Mac. Move the menu bar items while pressing the command key.

Customize Control Center and Menu Bar Items

Also, macOS Big Sur comes with a Dock and Menu Bar preference pane that lets you show/hide controls. So you can choose to display or hide related items to better suit your needs.

  1. Open System Preferences on your Mac (you can also click on apple menu in the upper left corner -> System Preferences)

2. Now, click Dock and Menu Bar.

3. Under the Control Center section, you should see a list of all the basic Control Center items such as: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AirDrop, Do Not Disturb, Keyboard Brightness, AirPlay, Display, Sound and Now Playing. These controls are always available in the Control Center.

You can click on the relevant item and then check/uncheck the box to the left of “Show in Menu Bar” to add or remove it from the menu bar.

Under the “Other Control Center Mode…” section, Accessibility Shortcuts choice. Then check the corresponding box to show Accessibility Shortcuts in the menu bar or control center.

Show Battery/Percentage in Control Center and Menu Bar

Click on Battery located in the “Other Control Center Mode…” section. Now check the boxes to show battery in menu bar and control center.

It is worth noting that the battery does not show the percentage by default. However, you can choose to show the percentage. To do this, make sure Check the Show Percentage box.

If you often have to dive into System Preferences to switch users, you’ll really appreciate the option to quickly switch users directly from your Mac’s control center or menu bar.

click Fast User Switching It is located in the “Other Control Center Mode…” section and then check the boxes to show the option to switch users in the menu bar and control center.

Note:

  • Note that Spotlight and Siri are menu bar controls only. Therefore, you cannot make them appear in the Control Center.
  • As mentioned above, some basic controls like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will always be available in the Control Center. You can only remove certain controls from the control center, such as Accessibility Shortcuts, user switching, and battery percentage.
