How to Create Custom Ringtones for Android

When it comes to choosing ringtones for our Android smartphones, the options are almost endless. Of course, you can always go to settings and choose a pre-made ringtone, but here we will explain how to quickly and easily create custom ringtones on Android.

The sounds that come with our smartphones are never that great, and choosing a song from Google Play Music or other music collections isn’t always the best either. Some are not loud enough to begin with, are too big to be used, or you just want a certain chorus or part of any song. This is where one or two of the many ringtone maker apps for Android come into play.

Instead of going to settings > sounds > ringtones and notifications and choosing one of the scary pre-installed ringtones, below we’ll show you how to create any song or ringtone you want from any audio or MP3 file you have. Alternatively, suggest a few apps with a wide selection that do all the work for you.

It has many options when it comes to creating custom ringtones for Android users. You can easily download already made ones from the internet or a range of apps, cut parts of songs on your computer, or use some easy-to-use apps from the Google Play Store and make your own. The latter is what I always do from my device and here’s how.

You’ll need some of your songs on your Android smartphone or tablet to get started. This can be on internal storage, a micro SD card, or even uploaded to your Google Play Music collection. You’ll then download one of the many free apps, cut the song wherever you want, and save it for use.

Making custom ringtones for Android is nothing new, and it’s something users have been doing for years. A popular app at the time was Ringdroid, but since then many excellent alternatives have come up that offer a better experience and do a good job creating custom ringtones for our devices.

Our favorite is an app called Ringtone Maker by the developers at Big Bang. Ringtone Maker is a free app that creates ringtones, alarms and notifications from MP3, WAV, AAC/MP4, 3GPP/AMR files. So the options are almost endless. You can set start and end notes by sliding the arrows along the timeline, pressing Start and End to save the point, or typing in timestamps. They offer cut and paste as well as a fade and dim option so your ringtone doesn’t just start to glow and scare everyone around you.

Instead of explaining everything here, you can quickly find how to videotape and review the app directly from the developers themselves. They have added this video to the Google Play Store and it highlights how impressive and easy to use the app really is. With over 10 million downloads and nearly 150,000 5-star reviews, this is your best bet when it comes to creating ringtones.

As you can see above, Ringtone Maker has a built-in file manager that lets you find songs that you have added to your phone after plugging it into a computer, added to a micro SD card, or saved using one of the many recordings. If you’ve never done this, you’ll need to go to settings, enable USB debugging, connect your phone to a computer, and copy and paste (or click and drag) any song from a PC to your smartphone. This can be a specific folder or anywhere Ringtone Make will find it. From there, import it into Ringtone Maker, make the appropriate edits and adjust the sliders as you see fit, hit play to make sure the sound is perfect, add fade or reduce options if you want, then hit save.

You will also notice that it has a feature that allows you to automatically set it to the default ringtone once saved. This means you don’t have to exit the app and mess around with your settings to make it your new ringtone. Simply select “make default” from the popup and you’re done. You can even set a new arrangement for a specific contact for your friends, family or loved ones. Having different songs for each person is something many do, and this app makes it child’s play.
