Microsoft PowerPoint is widely used for presenting slides or making presentations. The nature of the slides can be confidential, personal or the content can be in draft mode. Either way, a watermark can help to subtly take the message home. PowerPoint allows users to create and add watermarks to both slides and images.
A watermark is an image placed in the background and is slightly dimmed so as not to interfere with the text and other elements on the slide. You can embed a company logo to prevent unauthorized sharing. Either way, there is a way to add watermarks to PowerPoint slides.
Let’s start.
Create and Add Watermarks to Slides
You can add watermarks to individual slides or all slides at once in PowerPoint. If you want to add to all slides at once, use the Master Slide feature (start with Step 1 below). We will use the Slide Master function to add a watermark to all slides, but if you only want to add one slide, skip the first two steps below (start at Step 3).
Note that the first slide in a presentation is usually the master, and any design changes you make to this slide, such as fonts or background, will be reflected on all slides.
We will be using the PowerPoint 365 version, but the steps will remain more or less the same for other versions.
Stage 1: Click the View tab from the menu bar and select Slide Master.
Step 2: Select the first slide, the master slide, from the left sidebar. You will notice that all other slides are nested underneath.
Stage 3: Now under the Insert tab, click the Text Box button and select the ‘Draw Horizontal Text Box’ option.
Step 4: A text box will appear in the middle of the selected slide. In our case, it is the master slide. You can drag the corners to adjust the size now or later.
Step 5: Once you are satisfied with the size of the text box, click anywhere inside the box and start typing. Click the Home tab to customize the font type, size, color, and other details of the watermark. In some versions of PowerPoint, you can find these options on the Format tab instead.
Step 6: You can now rotate the watermark using the top circular handle.
Step 7: Select the Send to Bottom option under the Edit menu to keep the watermark in the background so that the text and other elements on the slides are clearly visible to the audience.
Step 8: Right-click the master slide and select Format Background.
Step 9: A sidebar will appear from the right. Under the Text tab, increase the transparency to 80% or another value to make the watermark fade into the background to make other elements and text more visible.
Step 10: Once you are satisfied with the watermark, click Normal under the Appearance tab.
Your watermark is ready and should be visible on all current and future slides created and added to the PowerPoint presentation. It’s a good idea to choose a light color so that text and other elements are easily visible to the naked eye.
Create and Add Watermarks to Images in PowerPoint
Are you planning to add some original screenshots or images to the PowerPoint slides? The method mentioned above will only add a watermark to the slides, but not to the images. But there is also a way to add watermarks to images directly in PowerPoint.
Stage 1: Simply drag and drop the picture you want to add to the slide. Alternatively, if the image is stored in the cloud or you want to search for a stock image, you can also use the Images option under the Insert tab.
Step 2: Under the Insert tab, click WordArt and choose a watermark text style that suits your needs.
Stage 3: A box will appear where you can type the text of the watermark.
Step 4: Just like in the previous point, you can change the position, font, size and color of the watermark and move around the watermark wherever you want.
Step 5: Under the Design tab, click Format Background.
Step 6: Now select the watermark text, click on Text Options and scroll a little to find the Transparency slider. To add a transparent effect to the watermark text, move the slider so it looks semi-transparent and doesn’t distort image elements.
You can change the look and feel of the watermark later.

PowerPoint used to be the default choice for presenting, but now things have changed. There are many other apps you can use to quickly create beautiful presentations. However, PowerPoint still offers many useful features and ease of use, and its advantage is tightly integrated with the rest of the Office applications.
