The concept is making waves in the productivity space. The company recently made the software free for personal use. The decision led to an increase in the use of Notion. From the first example, Notion sounds pretty overwhelming. Fortunately, Notion carries a rich library of templates. This also helps it stand out against the likes of Trello, Evernote, OneNote, and others.
Templates are the heart of the Notion experience. You can use the built-in template to get started or create a custom template from scratch. You can use the templates for tasks, travel planning, finance tracking, subscription tracking, project management, and more.
Your choice of templates is not limited to the Notion library. You can browse the template gallery from the Notion user community. Notion also lets you create a template for your specific use. This is how I’ve been using Notion since the beginning.
If you’re just getting started with Notion and aren’t sure where to start, you really need to take a look at our comprehensive Notion tips and tricks for beginners. It explains everything you need to know to start using Notion properly.
Why Do You Need to Create a Custom Template in Notion?
With custom templates, you can easily duplicate content combinations you use frequently in Notion.
For example, let’s say you want to fill out the same form every day, without constantly recreating it, asking you what you’re grateful for. Or you want to create the same to-do list at the beginning of each week. You can also create a custom finance tracker based on your uses and reuse it every month.
Notion allows you to create a custom template with the help of the template button. Let’s talk about how to find and use the Template button in Notion.
How to Create Custom Template in Concept Using Template Button?
Here I will create two custom templates in Notion. As I mentioned, you can create a template from scratch or use the built-in ones, make the necessary changes and save it as a custom template for later use.
I transferred the Weekly agenda template to my Notion page. I changed the icon, added the cover photo, added the relevant template details and it is now ready to use. I will be using the template every week, so importing the same template every time and making changes is impractical. Instead, I will create a template from it. Follow the steps below to create a custom template in Notion.
Stage 1: Import a related template from the template gallery and make the necessary changes to it.
Step 2: Create a new page in Notion and give it a relevant title.
Stage 3: Type ‘/template’ and Notion lets you create a custom template button.
Step 4: The software will open the ‘Configure template button’ box.
Step 5: First, add a corresponding name for the template button.
Step 6: Now you need to add the blocks you want to duplicate wherever the button is clicked.
Step 7: By default, it is set to the To-Do button. Tap and remove the six-dot menu.
Step 8: From the concept sidebar, drag the create template button to the template button.
Step 9: Hit the ‘Close’ button and now the template button is ready to use.
You can drag and drop this button on any Notion page and create a custom template for you with one click.
I created another template to keep track of finances each month. By following the steps above, you can create a template button for monthly finance tracking and use it every month.
You can also create template buttons for normal tasks. I’ve seen Notion users use the to-do template button to quickly create tasks.
How to Edit or Delete a Template Button
The concept provides flexibility to change the template button name and content. At any point, you can modify it or even delete the template button.
Move the cursor over the template button and you will see the little ‘Settings’ icon at the end of the template button. Tap on it and it will open the popup box to change the template button name and blocks for it.
You can also tap the six-dot menu and delete the template button entirely. Don’t worry, it just deletes the template button and doesn’t make any changes to existing templates.
Use Notion Like a Pro
As I mentioned, templates take the Notion experience to the next level. You can use and modify the built-in template and turn it into a template button as well. I’ve seen users create another Notion template from scratch and convert it to a template button for frequent use. How will you use template button in Notion?
