How to Check MacBook Pro Battery Health

Maybe you’ve recently noticed a drastic decrease in your MacBook Pro’s battery life, or you just want to know the real status of your laptop’s battery. Regardless of your personal reason, checking the battery health of a MacBook Pro (or any MacBook) is pretty simple. While most modern MacBooks come with batteries with 1000 charge cycle ratings, older ones such as the MacBook Pro (Late 15-inch 2008) and MacBook Air (Late 2008) have batteries with 500 and 300 charge cycles, respectively. The methods I mention below will help you determine if your battery is exceeding these charge cycle limits and needs a replacement if you want the best battery life for your Macs.

Including the latest macOS Catalina, macOS makes it much easier to keep track of the MacBook’s battery, including its cycle count. And there are several ways to do this. Let me show you how it works!

Check the Battery Health of the MacBook from the Status Bar

  1. First, while hold the option key and click on the battery icon It is located in the status bar in the upper right corner of the screen.
  2. You should now see the battery health of your MacBook/MacBook Air or MacBook Pro. It will be displayed as: Normal, Replace Soon, Replace Now or Service Battery.

While this is the easiest method, it won’t show you the battery health specs. If you want more information, you should use the method outlined below.

In the window you can see a lot of information about your battery. On this screen, you can also check the cycle count, which better shows how much life the battery has left. As you can see the condition of my MacBook Pro is normal. And the loop count is 152, which indicates that the maximum full loop is still a long way off.
