In this guide, we will show you how to check and monitor data usage on the Samsung Galaxy S8. Most videos these days are high resolution by default on the big Galaxy S8 screen. Even if you have an unlimited data plan, you can burn all your high-speed data by watching HD videos.
No one wants to exceed their monthly data allowance. Carriers will charge you expensive overage fees or slow down your internet speed when you reach your limit. Fortunately, Google has built controls right into Android so you can track, monitor and even set limits on data usage.
Our video above tells you everything you need to know and where to find it. Or follow the step-by-step instructions below.
How to Check Data Usage on Galaxy S8
There are several different ways to monitor data usage on Samsung devices, and some carriers like Verizon have dedicated apps for exactly that. However, it’s easiest to use the tools you already have on your phone.
Here you will instantly see how much data you have used this month. As you can see, I’m at 2.8GB with my limit reminder set to 3.5GB each month. Some details from carriers may differ slightly from what you see here, but they are usually close enough to be nothing to worry about.
It’s worth noting that your monthly billing cycle may not start on the 1st day of the month. If not, tap on it to change the dates to fit your schedule.
Monitoring Application Data Usage
If you’re close to going over your monthly data plan or using more than expected, you can check and see which apps are using all your data. Tap on it to see a graph that breaks down all the numbers.
This is a good place to start if you’re worried about getting overcharged fees. This shows you exactly where all your data is going. Tap an app for more details or to limit its background usage.
How to Set Data Alert and Limits on Galaxy S8
If you or a family member consistently exceeds the monthly data plan allowance, consider setting up data usage alerts or even limits. In the same menu mentioned earlier, follow the steps and pictures below.
Adding a data usage alert is a good way to avoid overcharges. If you have a 5GB monthly data plan, set it to something like 2-3GB. That way, you know when you’re using about half of your plan in a given month and when you need to cut back.
If you have a child or family member who constantly uses a lot of data, set a data limit. When you turn this on, mobile data will be completely turned off when you reach this limit. It saves you from excessive usage charges or internet speed restrictions. In the general data usage menu, Samsung also has a breakdown of WiFi data usage that gives you more information when you need it.
So be mindful of your data usage and set limits so you don’t go over your monthly data plan.
