The MAC address or Media Access Control address is a unique address assigned to a device’s network interface. You can use WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. on your Android smartphone or tablet. Network cards will have unique MAC addresses assigned to them. These addresses are used to uniquely identify devices on a network. IP address is assigned by network interfaces such as routers while MAC addresses are fixed for devices and assigned by the manufacturer, hard coded to the network hardware used by the device. However, although it is not possible to change a device’s MAC address unless you change the network hardware, there are ways to trick the operating system into broadcasting a different MAC address to the network.

MAC address spoofing can help in cases where your friend is blocking your WiFi network even though you are using it, you can most likely gain access by spoofing your MAC address. So, if you want Change the MAC address of your Android device, you can do it like this:

Find Android MAC Address and Interface Name

Before you change your Android device’s MAC address, you need to find (and write down) your device’s default MAC address. You will also need to know the interface name of your WiFi network card. To do this, simply follow the steps below:

  • On your Android device, go to: Settings -> WiFi. Here, tap the Settings gear icon to open the “.Configure WiFi” screen.

Change MAC address with Terminal Emulator

Now that you understand the interface name of your device, you can go ahead and change the MAC address to a new value. Go to any random MAC address generator to get a random MAC address you can use Web site. Once you have the new MAC address you want to use, simply follow these steps:

  • Launch Terminal Emulator for Android and type the following command:
    su

    This will give you superuser access on your Android device. You will need a rooted device for this.

    ifconfig [interface_name] hw ether [new_mac_address]

    Press Enter and your MAC address will be changed.

note: I tried various MAC address change apps for non-rooted devices, but they either requested Root access (strange) or only supported devices using MediaTek processors.

Easily Spoof MAC Address on Android
