In this guide, we will show you how to change the Galaxy S9 text message app. Some owners will enjoy the Samsung Messages app that comes with the phone, while others will choose from the dozens of apps available in the Google Play Store. Here’s how to add customization to your phone.

All you have to do is download a new text messaging app from the Play Store and set it as your default text program. Then the phone just uses that text app instead of the Samsung one that comes with the phone.

If the Galaxy S9 isn’t your first Samsung Galaxy, you’re probably familiar with Messages. Samsung’s text program has a few nifty features and some light customization, but that’s about it. The various alternatives in the Play Store have much more to offer.

First, go to the Google Play Store and download one of the many different third-party text apps. Textra is my favourite, Chomp is a fan favourite, and GoSMS is pretty good too. Some of these will walk you through our steps below, but if not, here’s how to set it up and get started.

It’s that easy. You just need to download a new app and then tell the phone to use that app only. You will no longer have to deal with Samsung Messages at all. Every message you send or receive uses the app you set as your default messaging client.

Once you set up your new app for text messaging, open it and it should instantly transfer or access all your texts. You must not lose anything.

Older Android devices received double notifications if you downloaded a second text messaging app. This is no longer the case. Android does not allow both to be set to “default” at the same time. Additionally, when you first open many apps like Textra, there will be a large button at the bottom. Making this process even easier. That way, you don’t even have to follow the steps above.

From here on out this is the only text app that can send and receive text messages or alert you. You can also greatly customize the experience if you choose Textra (or others). Go in and change the font, style, colors, balloon colors and even the notification icon. You can also change them for each contact, making your phone and notifications as unique as you want. That’s a level of customization that Samsung’s Messages app doesn’t offer, so most people would rather use something else.
