How to Change Background in Google Chrome

One of our favorite features on the Google Search homepage at the time was to change the background wallpaper on Google, but that was discontinued in late 2012 for a more streamlined experience for all users. However, with Google Chrome, users can customize the entire look and homepage of Google with themes.

If you’re using Google Chrome but don’t want the plain white look it offers and want to make things a little nicer, below we’ll explain how to change Google Chrome’s background image and its entire appearance.

Back in 2011 I gave Google and Gmail a beach theme look on my computer, which was a nice addition to the flat layouts we’ve been using for years, but most of them were killed at some point. However, with Chrome themes, you can make your entire web experience look completely different and as you see fit. There is a beautiful NYC theme (shown below) that is featured and free in the Chrome extension store as we speak right now. Read on to find out how easy it is to change the look of Chrome.

Themes in Google Chrome let you undo some of this customization, and there are even some minor tricks like the ability to completely remove the Google logo. If you look tight enough for a theme that fits what you want, leaving only a search bar and tons of other customizations.

Instructions

Start by going to the top right corner of the page in Google Chrome and selecting the three line menu button, and then select . After entering here, you will go down to themes and press .

From here you will be redirected to the Google Chrome web store and extensions area. There are hundreds of thousands of themes here. These are from Google itself, from the developers, or you can even customize your own. You can add lucky search buttons, search for brands, promotional materials and more. I chose the NYC at Night theme shown at the top of the page and it gives Google Chrome a nice look.

Once you’ve found the theme you want, simply select Add to Chrome and you’ll be fine. will verify compatibility and install. You will notice the changes instantly. Everything from movies, brands, games, sports and more can be applied for the look you’re looking for.

That’s it and you’re done. Now you have applied a custom theme which changes the whole look depending on how much the theme contains and changes the look of Google Chrome, the default page and everything else the theme is set to change. There’s an easy Undo button at the top if you don’t like it or go ahead and enjoy your new look.

You can easily go to the extension setting in Chrome and delete or disable a theme, revert to default or download and apply different themes. This is just one of the many ways to keep things fresh and different on your Laptop, PC and Google Chrome. There’s even a “Google Background Extension” plugin you can use to just change the Google Search background compared to the whole theme we showed you above. Try them all and enjoy.
