If you’re not a big fan of PayPal’s new user agreement, which states that the company will call you for any reason, here’s how to circumvent their new policy and avoid those annoying phone calls.
Recently PayPal updated user agreement and put it in a section that is quite controversial. Essentially, users agree to receive automated calls at any time to receive surveys, surveys and promotions, and the only way to opt out is to close your account.
You agree to receive automatically dialed or pre-recorded calls and text messages from PayPal at any phone number you provide to us. (i) notify you about your account; (ii) troubleshoot your account (iii) resolve a dispute; (iv) collect a debt; (v), (vii); or (viii) otherwise necessary to provide services to your account or enforce this User Agreement, our policies, applicable law, or any other agreement we may have with you.”
Another section details the ways its users provide a phone number to PayPal:
Your methods of providing us with a phone number include, but are not limited to, providing a phone number at Account opening, adding a phone number to your Account later, providing that number to one of our employees, or contacting us. from this phone number. If a phone number provided to us is a mobile number, you agree to receive SMS or text messages from that number.”
However, nowhere does it mention how PayPal could “otherwise obtain” a phone number you didn’t provide. This is still a bit of a mystery and there is perhaps no way around it for now, but you can be proactive with the phone numbers you physically give PayPal and make sure they don’t bother you during dinner.
Change Your PayPal Phone Number
The first thing you should probably do is change the phone number on your PayPal account. Although the company says they can call you from any number they can call you, the phone number associated with your account is probably the first number they can call.
However, replace it with a phone number that is not your main phone number. The best way to do this is get a Google Voice number or download burner application to get a disposable phone number. Then use this number and associate it with your account.
With this, you can set your phone not to ring and just ignore it and go to voicemail when someone calls this number.
You can also do this with other websites where they ask for a phone number for some weird reason. Give them your disposable number and you’ll never have to worry about getting an unwanted phone call.
There may be an occasional call, but this is where the next option comes into play.
Ignore Unknown Phone Calls
Of course, if PayPal says they can call you from any phone number they call, you’re in luck and you can’t really block such phone calls.
However, one method that really worked for me is to ignore calls from phone numbers I don’t recognize, and if it’s an important phone call for some reason, they’ll leave a voicemail and I can call them back if needed. I need.
On your iPhone, you can double tap the Power button to send a call to voicemail instead of letting the voicemail continue to ring, or press the volume down button to mute that phone call’s ringer. Yes, getting a phone call can be annoying in the first place, but it only takes a few seconds to ignore it and move on with your life.
Just wait
Another option is to wait and let everything happen by itself. This will upset enough PayPal users as the company could easily revert to its new policy. they have did it beforeso it can be easily repeated.
We’re also looking forward to seeing what the government has to say about it, and we’re confident some lawsuits will be filed.
In any case, there isn’t much users can do other than closing their PayPal account, but there are many users who rely on PayPal for many things, so closing their accounts isn’t really an option. We can really only hope that some serious PayPal rivals will rise in the market to take on the online payments giant.
