Pop-ups were a big problem in the early days of the internet. Sites use users to advertise and spam. Modern browsers like Google Chrome have had success blocking popups by default. However, you may need to enable popups in the Chrome browser for certain sites such as banking.
However, there may be times when you need to allow pop-ups from certain sites. These are sites that you trust and that you know won’t display ads or other unwanted content. In such a case, you may want to enable popups in Chrome. We will explain how to enable popups for certain sites in the Chrome browser.
Let’s start.
Enable/Disable Pop-ups in Chrome Web App
Start the Chrome browser and open the site you want to allow popups. Click the lock icon on the left side of the address bar. In the drop-down menu, check if you can find the Pop-ups and redirects. If so, select Allow from the list.
This will allow popups as well as redirects only on that particular site. Chrome will continue to block popups on other sites.
When a popup is blocked by Chrome on a site, you can see a popup blocker icon at the far right of the address bar. Click that icon to only allow popups on that site. But in our case the icon was not always visible.
Alternatively, if you are unable to view the dropdown option in the address bar, you can do so from the Settings menu.
Stage 1: Click on the three-dot menu icon on the right and select Settings. You can also write chrome://settings in the address bar and press Enter.
Step 2: Select Privacy and security from the left sidebar and click Site Settings.
Stage 3: Scroll to the bottom and select Pop-ups and redirects.
Step 4: Click the Add button under the Allow heading to whitelist a site for which you want to allow popups in the Chrome browser.
Step 5: In the popup that follows, enter the URL of the domain or site you want to block and click Add.
You can Block, Edit URL or remove the site from the Allow or even Block lists at any time by clicking the three-dot menu icon.
At the top of the list is a universal Blocked (recommended) button to allow or block all pop-ups. If the button is off, it means that pop-ups on all sites are blocked; this is also the default location in Google Chrome and most browsers for that matter.
Enabling/Disabling Pop-Ups in the Chrome Mobile App
Unlike its desktop counterparts, Chrome has no way to allow popups for certain sites in its Android and iOS apps. You can allow or disallow all sites. We recommend that you allow it temporarily and then deny it right after you’re done.
Here are the steps for Android:
Stage 1: Open Chrome on your phone, tap the three-dot menu icon at the top and select Settings.
Step 2: Tap Site settings, then Pop-ups and redirects.
Stage 3: Toggle the Change popups and redirects button here.
Here are the steps for iOS:
Stage 1: Tap the three-dot menu in Chrome and select Settings, then Content Settings.
Step 2: Tap on Block Pop-ups and disable Block Pop-ups.
Then Scan for Virus, Malware
We recommend that our readers have an antivirus and Malwarebytes on their computers. Malwarebytes is also available on Android and iOS. After you’re done, it’s a good idea to turn on the pop-up blocker to be safer and then run a full scan. It can protect you from future data breaches and headaches.
pop up, pop up
Chrome browser packs Pop-up blocker as one of many features. So if you need to enable it for certain sites, you can do it in Chrome. Other popular browsers like Firefox and Edge are also working on improving their games. Also, some new guys on the block like Brave and Vivaldi are taking an entirely different approach.
This is nice. End users have more options and may even decide to use two or more browsers for different purposes. After all, there are no set rules and browsers are just a means to an end.
