How to Add Text to PDF Files Using Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge already has a PDF reader that offers various annotation features such as highlighting, drawing and reading aloud. The company is now adding another useful feature to the mix – the ability to add text to PDF files. Yes, you will no longer have to rely on third-party tools to fill out forms or provide feedback to your team. Today, you’ll learn how to add text to PDF files in Microsoft Edge so you can seamlessly fill out forms without leaving the browser.

Adding Text to PDF Files Using Microsoft Edge (2021)

Before we get started, it’s worth noting that Microsoft is testing this feature on its Canary and Dev channels. However, I was able to partially access the feature in the stable version of Edge (more on that below). In the meantime, let’s get straight to the guide.

Steps to Add Text to PDF Files in Microsoft Edge

1. Open a PDF file in Edge and look for the new ‘Add text’ button in the top toolbar. You can also right-click anywhere in the PDF and select ‘Add Text’.

note: Right click option is available even in stable version. I was able to access it from Microsoft Edge version 93.0.961.47.

2. After selecting ‘Add text’, click on the part of the PDF file where you want to add new text. You will now see a text box in your PDF document with some floating formatting options. It contains 3 options – text color, text size setting and text spacing setting Options. Available color options include Red, Dark Green, Blue and Black.

3. Right next to the text color option buttons to increase or decrease the text size. You can use these options to change the size of the text according to your preference.

4. You also have the option to set the text spacing. This tool was particularly helpful in properly placing each letter in the attached form below in its corresponding box.

5. You can use the trash can icon next to the text range icons to delete the text box. Remember to use the keyboard shortcut ‘Ctrl+S’ or click the Save icon in the upper right corner to save the text you have added to the PDF file using Edge.
