Apple provides a handful of default glyphs for Shortcuts. For most users, these predefined features are more than enough for basic customization. But those who (like me) love to customize their stuff with a unique design can find it below the collection. Here comes the need to add custom glyphs to Shortcuts on iPhone and iPad. So if you want to give your shortcut icons a little personal touch but don’t know where to start, let me guide you.
Adding Custom Glyphs to Shortcuts in iOS 13 or iPadOS 13
A Few Things to Consider Beforehand
Now, what’s on your mind is where to get the custom glyphs. The internet is brimming with tons of options; Therefore, you can easily get various icons that can give your cheats a nice personalized look and also vividly represent them. Also, some sites even sell beautifully designed icons. So, getting the cool ones shouldn’t be a big question. To get a free glyph right away, open Safari (or any of your favorite web browsers) and search for the types of icons you want to get. When you find a better one, tap and hold the icon. At that time, Select “Add to Photos” to save the icon to your photo library.
Now that you have a good looking icon, keep a few things in mind. First of all, you can not only use glyphs and icons, but also any image from your photo library. Second, the trick only works to change the Home screen icon of a particular shortcut. While not a full-fledged solution, it’s very handy to bring some cool customization into the mix. Having said that, let’s get started with the steps!
1. Start Shortcuts app on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Now, navigate to: shortcut which icon you want to change and then little three dots. Next, tap on three horizontal dots in the upper right corner of the screen. After that, choose “Add to Home Screen”.
4. Next, tap . glyph. Now, a menu with multiple options will open from the bottom of the screen:
- Take a photo: Take a photo using your device’s camera and then use it as a shortcut icon.
- Choose photo: Select the photo/glyph you saved to your camera roll.
- Choose file: Select the saved glyph in the Files app.
Since I’ve saved the glyph in the Photos app, I’ll choose the “Select Photo” option.
5. Next, what you need to do select custom glyph you downloaded earlier. Finally, tap on Add in the top right corner and you’re ready to go!

Personalize Your Favorite Shortcuts with Custom Icons
So you can make your favorite shortcuts look more personal and elegant. While it would be better if Apple let it change the icon in the Shortcuts app as well, I’m happy with the option to at least change the Home icon. Do you have any feedback for us? Make sure to cross it.
