How to Add Continuity Support to Older Macs

If you want to use your Mac to make and receive phone calls from your iPhone, you must have newer Mac hardware with Bluetooth 4.0. Otherwise, you’re out of luck. However, a new tool added support for Bluetooth 4.0 dongles; this means older Macs can take advantage of Apple’s Continuity features.

OS X Yosemite was released during Apple’s iPad event in October, allowing Mac users to download and install the long-awaited new version of OS X. One of the coolest new features of OS X Yosemite is the ability to make and receive phone calls correctly. From your iPhone to your Mac.

This new feature is part of Apple’s Continuity initiative that aims to make OS X and iOS work together seamlessly, and OS X Yosemite is the first version of Apple’s Mac operating system to actually do this.

Continuity also allows you to start a task on one device and finish it on another. Apple calls this feature Handoff, and it’s another of the big features that Apple launched with the release of OS X Yosemite, and while it’s not useful for everyone, we can see it being a huge hit with the majority of Apple users.

iOS 8 came with Handoff support when it was released in September, but given that OS X Yosemite wasn’t officially released until October, iOS 8 users can use Handoff now.

If you have an older Mac that doesn’t have Bluetooth 4.0, you can still use Continuity to get your iPhone or iPad seamlessly integrated into OS X. How to do it is explained below.

How to Add Continuity to Older Macs

To add Continuity support to your old Mac, you’ll need two things: a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle and Continuity Activation Tool You can easily download it.

However, just any Bluetooth 4.0 dongle won’t do the trick. The Continuity Activation Tool developer advises users to “search for dongles based on the Broadcom BCM20702 chip, similar to those used by Apple in their Continuity-compatible Mac.” A few examples: Asus BT400, IOGEAR GBU521, GMYLE and others.”

Bluetooth 4.0 dongles based on the Cambridge Silicon Radio CSR8510 A10 chip are not compatible with the Continuity Activation Tool, so be aware when shopping dongles.

After purchasing a dongle, plug it into a USB port and then download and install the software. Just download the zip file and extract it when it finishes downloading. Then double-click the app and follow the on-screen instructions. Be sure to ignore or reject the “Access accessibility features” prompts.

There are a few drawbacks to using this tool and a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle. Basically, Instant Hotspot doesn’t currently work reliably when using a dongle, but a workaround seems to be sought as we speak, Also, Atheros Wi-Fi AirPort cards will prevent Continuity from working even when adding a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle, and a Patch will close it. It is not expected to be fixed in time.

However, if you want Continuity features on your old Mac, install the software at your own risk. You may encounter some bugs, but this is to be expected in any third-party software.

It’s also important to note that future updates to OS X Yosemite may break the Continuity Activator Tool, so be prepared to ignore future OS X updates or take your chances and see if they actually break the software.

Otherwise, Continuity is a great feature for OS X and iOS users. There is also a third-party app called. Continuity Keypad This brings the Phone app keypad in iOS 8 to OS X Yosemite, allowing you to easily dial numbers without having to open FaceTime or the Contacts app.
