How to Jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod touch

Apple has released the latest version of its mobile operating system, iOS 5.1.1, and fortunately for those running select Apple devices, a jailbreak for the software is now available. Yes, Redsn0w has been updated to iOS 5.1.1 and is available on devices not currently called iPad 2 or iPhone 4S that have been updated to iOS 5.1.1.

The latest version of Redsn0w, a jailbreak tool, has been confirmed to work with iOS 5.1.1; this means those using iPhone 4, original iPad, iPhone 3GS and third or fourth generation iPod touch.

Unfortunately, those using an iPhone 4S, iPad 2, or third-generation iPad don’t have a chance right now.

In short, jailbreak frees your iPhone from limitations imposed by Apple and the carrier of the device such as AT&T, Sprint or Verizon. Despite being legalized, jailbreaking will void your warranty, so keep that in mind before you take the plunge.

The jailbreak tool you will use, Redsn0w 0.9.10b8b, is a connected jailbreak. This means you will need to connect your device to a jailbroken computer every time you power it on.

An untethered jailbreak is in the works, but the release date is currently unknown.

With that said, let’s move on to how to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 for iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPod touch.

  1. Install the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Connect your iDevice to your computer and back up your files. Or if you have iCloud enabled, you can check your iCloud settings to see if the device has been backed up recently.
  3. Download the correct version of iOS 5.1.1. You can do this by syncing your iDevice with your computer or install manually.
  4. Download Redsn0w 0.9.10b8b for Windows or for … Match.

  6. Run redsn0w and once it boots up there should be an option for ‘Extras’. You will then want to select the ‘Select IPSW’ option from that screen.
  7. Select the iOS 5.1 file you downloaded in step 5.
  8. Next, on Redsn02 select ‘Jailbreak’ and then ‘Install Cydia’. It will take you to DFU mode and jailbreak your Redsn0w device to DFU mode.
  9. Select “Boot Only”.
  10. Enjoy a jailbroken iPhone.

After doing all this, your device should be jailbroken. As this is a tethered jailbreak, you will have to go to Redsn0w to start the jailbreak each time your device is shut down, but that’s a small price to pay to have jailbreak access from day one.
