How to customize your iPhone’s home screen with widgets and app icons?

One of the biggest differences between iOS and Android has always been customization. While Google’s mobile operating system gives more control over how software looks and feels, Apple limits these changes for the sake of consistency and usability. But with the release of iOS 14 last week, iPhone and iPad owners are suddenly starting to discover how to make their phones and tablets look and feel really different.

For example, search for “#ios14” or “#ios14homescreen” on Twitter and you’ll see hundreds of themed layout examples combining custom app icons, wallpaper, and widgets. (Be careful though, because few results for these searches are way too NSFW.) All over TikTok and YouTube, too, people are showing custom home screens and layouts.

Many are themed around popular culture phenomena such as: animal crossing, Steven Universe, harry potter, Minecraft, and BTSwhile focusing on a single aesthetic like any other line drawings or neon icons. Some even recreate old user interfaces. PlayStation 2’s memory card screenfor example, or don’t iOS 14 looks like iOS 6. The result is the kind of beautiful, visual chaos you usually associate with custom PC themes or Winamp skins.

What’s up

Why is this happening now? Partly due to the release of iOS 14, which gave the option to add widgets to their home screen. Widgets are often used to add quick access functionality to your home screen, allowing you to see information about reminders, weather or calendar appointments at a glance. But you can also use them to view any image you choose; this has led users to turn them into picture frames for their digital front room. You can also customize the appearance of the default widgets with the right app.

Other customization options available to users are much older. Choosing your own wallpaper is obviously an option that’s been around for decades, but creating custom app icons was only possible with Apple’s Shortcuts app. This was first introduced in iOS 12 in 2018 and allows you to automate certain actions on iOS. People use Shortcuts to create custom app icons for yearsbut with the release of iOS 14 and the advent of widgets, many seem to be reinventing this functionality.

How to customize your iOS home screen

Creating your own custom home screen is easy but time consuming. The main thing you need is real images: a custom wallpaper and accompanying icon pack. Some designers already share them in easy-to-download packages ( animal crossing example above) but a little Googling will usually get you what you need.

For the Windows 98 layout I made for the top image of this article this tweet) Thanks to some quick searches, I found all the background images and app icons I needed. It must be said that styling all these assets, including manually coloring the background of transparent PNG icons, was a complete pain and took at least an hour. Definitely go for pre-made packs if possible.

To add custom widgets to your home screen, you need to download an app called widget master. After downloading it, open the app and click to create the widget size of your choice. You can then customize the default iOS widgets like clock and calendar with different fonts and colors, or create a widget that displays a static image. After creating your widget, go to your home screen, long press the screen to bring up the customization options, then click the + sign in the top left corner of your screen to add a widget. Scroll down to find your widgetsmith creations.

Finally, to add custom app icons, Apple’s Shortcuts app. Once you get it, open it and click the + sign in the top right to create a new app. Then go to > Add Action > Scripting > Open Application > Select and select the application you want to customize. Once you’ve done that click “Next” in the top right, give the app a name and click Done.

Next, click the three-dot menu next to the shortcut action you just created and then the three-dot menu to customize the icon and add it to your home screen. again and then select “Add to Home Screen”. Then click the icon under the “Home Screen Name and Icon” pane and select the image you want to use from your camera roll. Wow! All ok.

You will now have an app with a custom icon, but there is a very annoying caveat: every time you click on an app, it will jump to the Shortcuts app first and Then for your chosen application. That means there’s a small delay every time you open an app, but who said it’s easy to get the #esthetic of your choice? However, if you know of a way around it, please let us know in the comments – and share the works you’ve been inspired to make yourself!
