personal assistant Google Assistant full of subtleties. Much more than a voice assistant, it is a true companion for your phone. You can even search or launch apps with it. You still have to know how to use it and few people know all the features offered. Here is a list of essential tips for getting the most out of Google’s voice assistant.
1. Activate OK Google voice command from any screen
Let’s start with the simplest trick that will allow you to take advantage of the assistant without having to launch the application. It works on most but not all phones. activate Google Assistant from all screensall you have to do is:
- Launch the Google app
- Press the top left button to open the menu and then select “Settings”
- Select the “Audio” option
- Check the “From any screen” and “Personalized results” boxes
2. Ask several questions in a row
Now that Google Assistant is available on all your smartphone screens, we’ll show you just how smart the search assistant is. See the example below:
- We asked the first question: “How big is Spain?”
- Then “What is the capital?” We asked the question. without mentioning that our research is about Spain. As you can see, the assistant figured it out on his own and gave us the answer right away.
3. Set location-based reminders
As you know, the personal assistant offers reminders. A very practical feature that will make you remember to do something like this at such a time or on such a date. But did you know that thanks to localization, you can also remember something to do in a particular place? To do this, all you need to do is:
- Speak your reminder aloud
- Check the location box and define your location manually as in the example below
4. Set an alarm
If going to your phone’s Clock app puts you off, know that it’s not essential to set an alarm. You can totally do this using Google Assistant. All you have to do is say the voice command “Wake me up at” followed by the time you want your alarm to go off and you are done!
5. Access Quick Settings
Yes, Wifi and Bluetooth connections are accessible from phone settings. Improved parameters since Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update. However, they can also be accessed via Google Assistant with a simple voice command. What could be better?!
6. Customize Cards
Google Assistant is a true Swiss army knife for your Android smartphone, providing you with contextual information based on the websites you visit, the apps you use, and the places you visit. But that’s not all because this information is also customizable. Unfortunately, the option is not available on all phones. For example here we managed to use it on our Nexus 9 but not on our Xperia Z2. That said, here’s how to do it:
- Launch the Google app
- Press the top left button to open the menu and then select “Customize”
- Select websites and apps that you want or no longer want to receive cards from
7. Launch voice apps
You can do almost anything and even launch apps with Google Assistant. At this level, Google Assistant frankly has nothing to envy its rivals, and that’s a good thing. All you have to do is say the “Start” voice command followed by the name of the app you want to open. And as you can see below, it works perfectly.
8. Translate text
If you have an Android smartphone or tablet, we suspect you also use Google Translate, which means why not do it directly from your assistant instead of going to the app, it’s still better, right? All you have to do is specify the term you want to translate and then the target language.
9. Search
Finally, if searching for numbers in your contacts is torture for you, know that you can also dial using your personal assistant. All you have to do is say “Call” and then specify the name your contact is registered with. If you’ve assigned multiple numbers to the same contact, simply say “first” or “second” to choose the one you want. Note that sending messages is also possible.
