The new version of Gmail added your contacts’ profile pictures directly to your mailing list. If this feature can be practical to see at a glance who you’re talking to, it’s much less so when your contacts don’t have a Google+ account and therefore don’t have a profile photo in the app.
Instead, the first letter of the sender’s name is displayed in a color. It’s a box that takes up unnecessary space, especially on phones with low resolution. Here’s how to delete your contacts’ profile pictures in Gmail 4.5:
- Once in the app, navigate to: “Settings > General Settings”, then uncheck the “Sender Image” box. That’s it, you’re now free of those images and you get some space on the screen of the text!
In the new version, just tap any message to open it, nothing new so far. However, you may have noticed that if you want to select one or more messages for deletion, for example, you have to do this by tapping on your contacts’ pictures. If you’ve decided to follow our first tip, you won’t be able to do that anymore.
- To select one or more posts without using profile pictures, press and hold the message(s) for one second, then they turn blue. Do the same to deselect.
Nothing could be simpler if you want quick access to the “Delete” button as in the previous version and not just the “Archive” button as in the default case:
- find in “Settings > General Settings > Archive and Delete Transactions”.
- Then a popup will pop up asking what kind of button you want to display.
- Back on the main page, you will see the “Delete” button appear when you select one or more messages.
