The Photos app has seen some nice improvements in macOS Catalina. One of the nifty little features that caught my eye is “autoplay videos and live pictures”. They (sort of) not only make the photo library feel alive, but also give you a glimpse of what your shots have in store. While I really like this addition, sometimes I find it a little distracting. Apart from being distracting, it also consumes a good amount of battery. So, when preserving battery life is more important than pleasing your eyes with auto-running clips, be sure to disable Live Photos and videos autoplay in macOS Catalina.
Disable Live Photos and Videos Autoplay in the Photos App on Mac
macOS provides a simple way to customize Photos app settings. So you can quickly go to preferences to enable/disable this feature according to your needs. Let me guide you through these easy steps!
- Start Photos application on your Mac. You can find the app in the Dock. If it’s not there, search for it in Spotlight and open it.
2. Now, click on Photos menu select it in the upper left corner of the screen and Preferences.
3. Next, General If the tab is not selected, it is selected. Then uncheck the box “Auto Play Live Photos and Videos”.
That is all! In the future, clips and live photos will no longer automatically play in your photo library. So you can browse through your albums with some peace of mind.
Well, if you change your mind and want to let these great photos catch your eye, all you have to do is go back to Photo Preferences and tick the box.

Stop Automatically Playing Live Photos and Videos
This is a pretty easy way to prevent live footage and clips from not only distracting you, but draining your MacBook’s battery. It’s good that Apple has made this a feature of choice so users can turn it on or off according to their needs. Do you have any feedback about this new macOS feature?
