Controlling Your TV Volume with the Apple TV Remote 1

Controlling Your TV Volume with the Apple TV Remote

If you want to consolidate your remotes a bit and control your TV’s volume using your Apple TV remote, here’s how to set it up easily.

The Apple TV set-top box doesn’t have its own volume, so if you want to unmute a movie you’re watching, you’ll have to take your TV’s remote and turn it up that way. Unless you have set up your Apple TV remote to do this.

One of the big annoyances I encountered while using my new Apple TV was that I would start a movie but the volume would be too loud or too low.

So I would have to get the TV’s remote to change the volume, but it turns out you can actually adjust the volume using the Apple TV remote, thanks to some new dedicated volume buttons on the remote.

Here’s how to control your TV’s volume with the Apple TV remote.

The first thing you’ll want to check is if your television has HDMI-CEC capabilities, and if so, make sure you have it enabled.

HDMI-CEC is a technology that allows your Apple TV (and other set-top boxes and devices) to send commands to your television via the HDMI cable connected between them. So waking your Apple TV can automatically turn on your TV, and putting your Apple TV to sleep can automatically turn your TV off.

If your TV has HDMI-CEC, you don’t need to set anything up on your Apple TV for the Apple TV remote to adjust your TV’s volume, except make sure everything is set up in the steps below.

If your TV doesn’t have HDMI-CEC, you’ll have to manually set your Apple TV remote to work with your TV’s volume, but it’s really easy to do.

On your Apple TV, go to .

Select from here or select if you have an audio receiver. If you plan to use HDMI-CEC, select .

Then go down. You can go directly to this option and after setting all of them Apple TV will automatically select one of the IR options above.

From there, grab the remote that controls your TV’s volume and point it at the Apple TV while holding the volume up button. Do this until the progress bar is full. You will do the same with the volume down button.

If it doesn’t respond, try tapping the volume buttons in really quick succession. I had to do this for my remote and it worked great. However, your remote may have an IR signal that Apple TV cannot read. In that case, you’re out of luck.

Otherwise, it should be good to go after detecting the volume up and volume down keys. You can now use the volume buttons on the Apple TV remote to control your TV’s volume.
