Closing Apps in iOS 7

Apple released iOS 7 yesterday and tons of users have downloaded and installed the update only to discover an entirely new user interface. Apple has radically changed the look of iOS for the first time since it was first released in 2007. Of course, a lot of the mechanics are still the same, so experienced iOS users will be familiar with it. However, the same cannot be said for iOS novices.

In this how-to, we’ll show you how to close apps. It’s pretty simple to do, but the method has changed a bit in iOS 7 compared to iOS 6. However, this time it’s much easier and much faster, allowing you to become a ninja that literally shuts down apps.

How to Close Apps?

To close an app, simply press the Home button to return to the home screen. If the app is in a folder, you need to double-press the Home button to return to the home screen because you have to exit the folder before going to the home screen.

Pressing the Home button to exit an application does not close the application completely; it will continue to run in the background, so if you want to go back it will stay running. Double-click the Home button to close an app completely. This will bring up the new multitasking tray of iOS 7.

You can swipe the multitasking tray horizontally and look at all currently open apps. Each application contains a preview card and below it the icon of the application. To close an app, close it completely by swiping up on the app’s preview card.

Why Do You Want to Close Applications?

Closing apps not only trashes the multitasking tray, but also saves processing resources, saving battery life. The more apps you run in the background, the more CPU usage is used; this means that the battery has to consume more power for the CPU to do such a job.

Of course, we don’t recommend getting into the OCD habit of closing apps completely every time you exit an app, but at the end of the day it’s a good idea to review the multitasking tray and close any apps you’re using. When you’re not using it, this way your phone can relax a bit overnight so you have some battery left for the morning.
