Anyone ranking the best Android phones of the first half of 2014 should add the HTC One M8 to the top of the list, but it comes with a problem we need to resolve: the battery leaves us reluctant (although it’s still better than the older version of this great phone). Since users cannot replace it with a larger capacity battery lthey can do it with ike one Samsung Galaxy S5, they need to take care of battery life.
Follow these tips to get the most out of life. HTC A M8 Battery.
Here’s how to quickly access and customize HTC One M8 settings.
Enter HTC One M8 Settings to Reduce Battery Usage
Swipe down from the top of the HTC One M8 screen to see this page
HTC One Sense interface allows users to quickly access settings by swiping down from the top edge of the screen and tapping the icon that shows the grid of settings shortcuts. It is in the upper right corner and looks like a square with a small head silhouette and five small squares to the right and bottom (see above).
A series of buttons appear on the grid, with the main Settings app sitting in the upper-right corner of the grid. Users can also open Settings from the App Drawer, the middle button in the dock at the bottom of the screen. The icon looks like a grid of small 3×3 squares.
Fast Battery Saver
To save battery quickly, scroll down and tap the icon with small heads and squares. Tap one or all of the icons listed in the bullet list below to reduce battery usage. Press and hold the icon to open the main Settings app screen for that setting item. Opening the full Settings app gives you more granular control over these settings. We’ll discuss later on how to save battery life using the Main Settings.
Many of these icons will help you save battery life.
Here is the list of things to change from the quick settings screen.
Turn off anything you won’t be using. When the phone drops below 30%, if the day isn’t over, turn off most of the above features until an accessible outlet is found. Thirty percent usually lasts for about three hours with normal use.
Other Settings to Save Battery Life
Here are a few more ways to save battery life. None of these alone will help the battery run longer for hours, but combined, they can extend battery life to keep the user running throughout the day.
Change some Wi-Fi settings by opening and tapping . Tap the word Wi-Fi, not the On/Off button.
Tap the menu button in the top right, indicated by three vertical dots.
Tap on the pop-up menu.
Choose now. A screen with three options opens (see above). Leave it for most normal function or tap to reduce battery usage when phone screen turns off. This also means that it will take a few seconds for the phone to reconnect to a Wi-Fi network, so if it gets annoying, switch it back again. Selecting means the phone will turn off the Wi-Fi every time the screen is turned off. This can significantly increase the amount of cellular data a person uses. If you choose this, make sure to turn off automatic app updates in the Google Play Store.
Before exiting the menu in the Wi-Fi settings, make sure it is checked above. HTC One M8 is marked by default, but make sure it’s not turned off.
On the main Settings app screen, tap below the section. Now turn it off from the bottom of the screen.
Do not use live wallpaper as it extends battery life.
Enter from the main application screen. Tap and use a static photo instead of one of the photos. Do this by selecting any of the other options on that screen and select an image.
Location settings will consume battery life as it keeps the GPS sensor on, so go from the main Settings app screen. Tap the On/Off button at the top right to turn it off.
The phone’s screen uses more battery power than anything else, so keeping it off as much as possible will help extend battery life. Shorten to reduce battery consumption. Defines the time it takes for the phone to automatically turn off the screen when not in use.
Auto sleep mode turns off the screen only when the phone detects no motion. Wave one hand over the screen to keep awake. Choose 30 seconds for the best mode to save battery power.
From the main Settings screen. Tap on it. Select a shorter time from the list. Choose the shortest time to save the most battery life. I prefer the 1 minute which balances the battery savings and doesn’t turn off the screen too fast.
The mod will quickly turn off the screen unless the user waves his hand over the screen. The phone detects motion and keeps the screen on.
Change these display settings to consume less battery life.
Select from the same screen. This controls what turns the little LED off and on. Deselect anything that is not important. This doesn’t save much power, but every bit helps.
Uncheck them to save a little battery life.
HTC One uses a function called Settings app. For minimal battery life savings, go to this section of settings and turn them off. It won’t add much to the user, but it will help a little.
Select in the main application. First, turn off the third feature from the top. Then scroll to the bottom of the screen and deselect to turn the feature off. The vibration feature uses very little battery life.
To temporarily stop an app, open the app settings from the Running apps list in the Apps section in Settings.
Apps running in the background can consume a bit of battery life so go to the section from the main Settings screen. Swipe left twice to show apps. Find and tap the apps you don’t use, and then tap for any services listed there. Unfortunately, these apps will come back when the phone restarts or if the operating system thinks you need them. To fix this, go back to the home screen and swipe to show the apps list. Find the app you don’t want running at all and tap on it. Then tap and then tap if the app is preinstalled on the phone by HTC or the wireless carrier.
To stop an app from running in the background, first Force Stop and then Disable (this was already disabled).
An example is the AT&T Locker app. This app stores settings and backup files up to 5GB for free. I disable it because I don’t use it. AT&T or HTC do not allow the user to uninstall these apps. However, if the user opens the App drawer by tapping the grid of 9 small squares in the bottom center of the screen, they can tap and hold one of such apps and drag it up to the Uninstall link. The phone tells the user that this will remove the app icons from the screen and gives instructions to re-enable the app from the App section of Settings. Just reverse the instructions given in this paragraph.
In the Downloaded apps section of Apps in Settings, tap Disable from the app’s list.
Biggest battery saver Battery Manager Settings section. Tap this to open the manager. First, tap the words at the top of the list below the battery image, not the On/Off switch on the right, and check all or some of these options. When each is checked, it will help save power. Go back and now enable this option by tapping the On/Off switch on the right.
Use the three options here to change the power saving settings. Turn on Power saver and Show battery life to know when the power has reached critical levels, and turn on Sleep mode to save more power when the phone is not used for a long time.
Also, turn on the feature that turns off the data connection when the phone is asleep for a long time. After turning on sleep mode, tap the name to show more settings. A checkmark automates this based on the user’s use of the phone. To gain more manual control, uncheck it and set a time to initiate Sleep mode and end Sleep mode.
Also, turn on the icon in the status bar to help the user know about the battery level so that the person can make changes to any of the above settings to get more battery life when they desperately need it. When a peson turns it on, the percentage remaining in battery will appear next to the battery icon next to the clock at the top of the screen.
