Microsoft has made Windows 8.1 easy to use. When the company released the original Windows 8 operating system, users were impressed with all the changes that Microsoft brought. Now it is unclear whether everything is easier with the Windows 8.1 update; but it has managed to make it easy for users to back up their important data to the cloud storage utility OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive).

Here’s how to back up files and settings to OneDrive in Windows 8.1 and protect your files from any misfortune that may happen to your home or office.

Before we begin, you’ll want to make sure you have the Windows 8.1 update installed on your Windows 8 device. It’s free and you can install it from the Windows Store if you don’t have it. You will need it before using this tutorial. Usually this setup takes about half an hour.

If you’re signed in with a Microsoft Account, Windows will automatically sync your Personalization Settings. This means your Start Screen layout, Desktop background, and color options will sync automatically. You can also sync your language settings, Wi-Fi networks, passwords and favorites by tapping and clicking on these options.

Now open a folder and click the SkyDrive button on the right side of the window.

Dragging or dropping any files into this folder will automatically make them available on other devices and automatically upload them to OneDrive. These are also available through the OneDrive website. You can right-click each file to choose which files are stored on your device and which are saved only to One Drive.
