One of the biggest problems when it comes to watching NFL games is something called a paywall. Popular apps like Fox Sports Go, NBC Sports or WatchESPN require a cable subscription login. So if you’re using a cable TV alternative like FuBoTV, you probably won’t be able to use these apps.
Fortunately, these are not the only ways to watch NFL football live or online. In fact, the easiest way to watch games from last year is on your smartphone absolutely free. Plus, we’ve rounded up six more great ways to watch your team on Sunday, Monday, or TNF below.
How To Watch NFL Football Games Without Cable In 2020
We’ll be honest, it’s hard to catch every game even with cable. Territorial restrictions and power cuts are frustratingly going nowhere. However, if you want to save money or get rid of those expensive cable contracts, these are your options.

One of my personal favorites is Sling TV from Dish, which streams live over the internet. Sling TV can completely replace your cable bill and is only $30 a month without a contract. You can pay another $5-10 a month for add-on sports or movie packages, and they offer a lot of content. Plus, unlike any other, with Sling TV you can log in to WatchESPN and catch NCAA Football on the go.
In fact, Sling TV is one of them. best for sports because they have NFL Network, RedZone, Fox Sports, FS1, FS2, ESPN and much more. The basic package includes over 40 premium channels for $30. Then Sling offers DVR recording and multi-user streaming. Unfortunately most regions don’t get Fox, but NFL RedZone shows every single game, which is even better.
Additionally, Sling TV works pretty much anywhere and everywhere. Whether it’s on your TV, phone, laptop, tablet, computer, or even by logging into a web browser while you’re sitting at work. Literally the most versatile way to watch TV on the market. It also works with streaming boxes, Amazon Firestick or TV, Roku, Xbox, PS4, Apple TV and more.
You can easily make up to $40-50 a month after adding popular movie and sports packages, but it’s still more affordable than cable. In fact, at just $25 a month, you spend the same amount that most people spend on Cox, DirecTV or Comcast monthly after an entire season. Let it sink in!
Yahoo! Sports (And Other Mobile Apps)
For years the only way to watch NFL on a smartphone was to use Verizon Wireless and pay for NFL Mobile or have a Sunday Pass. This is no longer the case. In early 2018, Verizon Wireless and the NFL signed a major deal that allows anyone and everyone, regardless of mobile carrier, to watch tons of NFL games completely free from a smartphone.
Simply download Yahoo! fitness app for android or iOS and press the bottom middle or right side button. They will release dozens of games each season, including pre-season and playoffs, completely free, not to mention the championship in early 2020.
Personally, Yahoo! Sporting a Chromebook that I mirrored to an HDTV. It gives me live NFL Football for free on the big screen.
You can also stream the same games for free with the new NFL Mobile app, which no longer requires Verizon Wireless. Verizon subscribers get more content within NFL Mobile, but are no longer limited to a single carrier. Anyone can use it, whether it’s AT&T, T-Mobile, Boost Mobile or anyone else.
It’s worth noting that the official NFL Mobile app has a lot to offer fans. My favorite is the radio audio feeds, score alerts, updates, highlights and more for both teams and markets. Anyone can download and enjoy most of what it has to offer. both Android and iOS.
HDTV Antenna
Perhaps the easiest way to watch TV without cable, Using an antenna. Whether it’s an old-fashioned set of bunny ears or a new HDTV Antenna, both work. The only problem with this method is that Antenna only receives your local team or market games. If you’re a Packers fan living in Las Vegas like me, you can skip this method.
I still prefer TiVo BOLT and a newer HDTV Antenna from Amazon. Although BOLT is not required, you will get a better experience. An Antenna will get local games and loads of other channels. In some cases, Antenna had better image quality than cable. Not to mention that BOLT offers DVR recording and built-in apps like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and more. Making it the only box I need on my TV stand.
You’ll want to make sure you have a good signal and enough space on your roof. If you are within range of the big nets, you will not miss a match. I can get ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC with this setup. The games are free and most of them end up in HD. another option This is a flat indoor HD Antenna.
You can also watch regional matches, Sunday Night Football on Sunday afternoon and choose Thursday night matches. Also, Sling TV can combine your antenna with TV guide, giving you a pretty hassle-free experience for cheap.
PlayStation Vue
Another solid option is to use the PlayStation Vue streaming service. While this costs money, it’s much cheaper than cable and you can access ESPN, NFL Network and more.
PlayStation Vue has a good selection of channels and it’s a monthly payment. This means you can pay for streaming access throughout the NFL season and cancel anytime. There are no contracts. PS Vue has a lineup of popular channels starting at $49.99. Or you can get the same popular squad + sports from the “Core” package. $59.99 per month. ESPN, NFL Network and more. Ditch cable and an Antenna for a complete TV and NFL package. Similar to Sling TV, but twice as expensive.
And because you pay for PlayStation Vue, you’ll likely get access to Fox Sports Go, WatchESPN, and other apps we mentioned at the top of the page. This is because you are now a paying subscriber and can sign in to bypass the paywall on most apps to watch from your phone or tablet.
Or borrow login information from a friend and watch the games you’re interested in.
NFL Sunday Ticket
Did you know you can buy the NFL Sunday Ticket without DirecTV? It’s just $99 for college students and they even have a standalone streaming option starting at 1. $69.99 for the entire season. There are a few limitations though.
You will need to pass an “fit test” first. Basically, if you live in a college dorm, apartment, or other area where DirecTV satellite isn’t working, you’re eligible. While this option isn’t available to everyone, it’s one more thing to try before paying an expensive cable bill.
Oddly enough, I entered my address a few years ago and I got the right. So even if you think you can get a satellite dish, it’s worth checking out just in case. Find out if you’re eligible by clicking here.
Then, in 2019, DirecTV (AT&T) NOW offers the Sunday Ticket. Sling TV is a service similar to PS Vue or YouTube TV and is broadcast television. It’s like cutting the cord but still relying on DirecTV.
NFL Game Pass
Another option picture NFL Game To go past, although it’s less than ideal and our least favorite alternative. The way the NFL refers to its website is a bit misleading, so be careful before you sign up.
With NFL Game Pass, you’ll watch almost every NFL game, but only AFTER it’s televised. It’s not live, it’s replayed on demand. And while this may be annoying for some, others don’t mind, it also has a few benefits and nice features that you might like.
NFL GamePass lets you watch pre-season games live, then thousands of current and old games on demand. So when the game is over, for example after work, you can adapt quickly. We really like the option to watch regular broadcasts like everyone else, or what the NFL calls “condensed” versions, with no ads or timeouts. You can watch an entire intense match in about 45-60 minutes.
Game Pass also has access to the NFL archive highlights, analysis, coaching movies, and years and years of games, including the Super Bowls. It costs $99 or you can make four easy payments. One for each month of the regular season. It also works on mobile, which is nice.
YouTube TV
Last but not least, Google’s TV streaming service is YouTube TV. It basically works the same as PS Vue or Sling TV and is perfect for Football fans. However, there are a few limitations and restrictions you’ll want to know about.
For $49 per month, you’ll have access to everything on YouTube, live TV, sports, video-on-demand, DVR features, 70+ channels, and more. YouTube TV has access to almost any channel you could ever need to watch NFL games live. Check out the list below and you’ll see how great this is for NFL fans.
As you can see above, this base price has all the major networks like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, ESPN, Fox Regional Networks, Fox Sports 1 & 2 and much more. NFL Network and RedZone are not included, but they still don’t stream a lot of games. And from 2018-2022 Thursday Night Football on Fox, so you don’t really need the NFL Network anymore. The only problem with YouTube TV is that you run into many regional restrictions when trying to watch games, and most regional affiliates are also missing. All FS channels will give you plenty of NCAA College Football, so that’s a plus.
Additionally, you can try FuBoTV, which is very similar to Sling or YouTube TV but designed for sports fans first. This means that sports are a priority, even though they have channels for the whole family.
Now decide which of the above options is best for you. Either way, they’re cheaper than spending $180 a month on cable for 2,000 channels you’ll never watch.
