A survey conducted by the company Tinuiti sought to uncover the notable differences in behavior between gamers of different generations, particularly highlighting generations Z and Baby Boomers.

With more than 1,000 participants, the research aimed to improve marketing strategies and investment targeting. See the distinctions in the use of platforms and social networks between generations, analyzing everything from Baby Boomers to Generation Z.

Generations involved

To understand the differences, it is crucial to define the generations involved:

  • Baby Boomers (between 59 and 77 years old);
  • Generation X (between 43 and 58 years old);
  • Generation Y (Millennials, between 27 and 42 years old);
  • Generation Z (between 11 and 26 years old).

Such age groups influence the behavior of each generation, given the historical context in which they grew up. Gen Z was the first to experience the digital age in their growth, while Gen Y witnessed a transition to the digital age.

Differences between generations

Motivations to play

Older gamers, represented by Baby Boomers, tend to play games for fun and relaxation. On the other hand, younger people, Generation Zuse games as a way to socialize and make new friends while having fun.

Preferred gaming platforms

Older gamers like Gen Z have a preference for using computers for gaming. Generation Y (Millennials), in turn, is the one that uses consoles the most, especially Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox. In terms of portable devices, Generation Z shows a marked preference.

Mobile devices

There is a significant disparity when it comes to mobile devices. It is older gamers, such as Baby Boomers and Generation X, who prefer to play on smartphones, which contrasts with Generation Z’s tendency to always be connected to these devices.

Streaming platforms

Twitch, a popular streaming platform among gamers, is underutilized by older gamers as well as Gen Z. Millennials and Gen X make up the majority of Twitch users.

Furthermore, the practice of following streamers and interacting with the gaming community is more prevalent among younger generations.

Social media

YouTube is the social network most used by all generations when searching for information about games. However, Facebook, the second most used network, is preferred by older players. Networks specifically focused on the topic of games are also popular.

On the other hand, Instagram and TikTok are much more used by Generation Z, while they are rarely used by Baby Boomers, especially when we talk about games.
