Elden Ring Somber Smithing Stones are what you’ll need to upgrade the unique, named weapons you’ll collect as you progress through the Elden Ring. These are different from regular blacksmith’s stones and are therefore much rarer, therefore slightly more complicated to obtain.
Basic Elden Ring Smithing Stones will help you level up the ordinary weapons you find in the world.
From Moonveil to Rivers of Blood and the final Elden Ring Sacred Relic Sword, unique weapons in Elden Ring can only be upgraded to +10, but they require less Somber Smithing Stone than the regular type, meaning you can potentially power them all up. the faster they are, not to mention their powerful nature, sometimes you can get more out of them than standard, everyday weapons.
Either way, you’ll want to know where to find Somber Smithing Stones in the Elden Ring that amplify your power and deal more damage with each encounter. We’ll take you to Somber Smithing Stones locations in Elden Ring below and even how to farm Somber Smithing Stones.
Select the following layer you need for their location where you can find Somber Smithing Stones in Elden Ring of your choice:
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [1]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [2]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [3]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [4]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [5]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [6]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [7]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [8]
- Gloomy Smithing Stones [9]
If you want Somber Ancient Stones towards the end of the game, we’ve explained it in the Elden Ring Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones guide!
Unlike standard Smithing Stones, it only requires a single Somber Stone to upgrade a weapon to the next level – so if you have a +3 unique weapon, you only need one Somber Smithing Stone. [4] To reach +4.
So, while there are dozens of Somber Smithing Stones of all levels throughout the entire Elden Ring, we’ve only outlined three that are really easy to obtain for each level! This way, you can upgrade three different unique weapons up to +9, which should definitely carry you until you have access to the tools to collect all of the Somber Smithing Stones we’ve outlined at the bottom of this page. However, we did not include the Gloomy Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones that will get you +10 – they are a unique and special item worthy of their guide and will be coming soon!
Where to buy Tier 1 Somber Smithing Stones?
To get Somber Smithing Stones [1], you have many options, because they are spread out in large quantities across the map and it won’t take you long to buy them – in fact, you can buy them in unlimited quantities from Blacksmith Iji in the northwest. Liurnia is on the way to Caria Estate! However, as you’ll need to cross Stormveil to get to this point, here are a few more.
- Near Agheel Lake bridge – Just south of the east end of the bridge, you will see a corpse in a chair with the Somber Stone on it.
- Dragon Parish Church – When you reach the island from the Coastal Cave, you can find the Somber Smithing Stone. [1] on the southwestern side of the island.
- Southeast of the Colosseum – In a ruined building above the bridge, there is a Teardrop Scarab that drops a Somber Stone when killed.
Where to buy Tier 2 Somber Smithing Stones?
Again, an infinite number of levels can be purchased from Iji, so if you’ve reached Liurnia, you’re all set about it. In fact, you may need to do just that – there aren’t many Gems of this type until you reach Luirnia. Luckily before that, we hunted down a few you can reach.
- Gaelic Tunnel – At the tunnel entrance, lower the ledges from the wooden platform until you find a small hollow with Stone in it.
- Outside Castle Morne – Before entering the castle, turn left (Southeast) and go down to the beach and see a corpse with four jellyfish around it. Loot the corpse for the stone.
- Stormveil Cliffs – From the Rampart Tower Site of Grace, go out the North gate and go down to the left of the large platform where one of the Warhawks came from. Descend to a ledge and follow him down the cliffs until you find a knight and Stone.
Where to buy Tier 3 Somber Smithing Stones?
You’ll definitely need to go beyond the starting areas, as Limgrave and attached areas don’t provide Somber gems to get you above +2. Liurnia is a good place to start with a few options to choose from.
- Blacksmith Iji – We’ve talked about him before, but Iji is also selling a trio of Tier 3 Somber Stones for 4000 Rune each.
- four bell towers – Looking at the cliffs, just north of Belfries, a corpse in a chair holding a Stone.
- north lake edge – Another chair with a lootable corpse inside, on the north side of this lake, on higher cliffs.
Where to buy Tier 4 Somber Smithing Stones?
Now you really want to turn around and head back to Limgrave, then go straight through it to the devastated Caelid Realm. It will require a bit of spelling in some cases, as Smithing Stones tend to require more skill as you progress, but we’ve listed the easiest options. Or alternatively, go back to Iji – he also sells a few level 4 gems.
- Sellia Crystal Tunnel – There are three separate Tier 4 Stones that can be found scattered along both corpses and walls throughout this tunnel.
- Gaelic Tunnel – Back in the Gael Tunnel, in this area there is a room with a large number of octopuses led by a giant octopus. Here is a Stone you must receive.
- Caelid Minor Erdtree – On the edge of the land east of Little Erdtree, there’s another Stone for you to grab.
Where to buy Tier 5 Somber Smithing Stones?
You are no longer dependent on Iji, you will have to go and get those Gems yourself. At this point in the game you should have broken Altus and even Leyndell himself – and if you’re having trouble getting past the janitor, we have a guide on how to beat the Draconic Tree Sentinel in the Elden Ring.
- Sealed Tunnel – There are a lot of Stones here, but in the episode with the Abducted Virgin (rolling, iron maiden) there is a level 5 Stone on the Northwest wall.
- Award Bower – There is a Teardrop Scarab in the southwest of this Blessing Zone – kill it to get the Stone you want.
- Erdtree Temple – To the north of this Place of Blessing is a small room with at least three Somber Smithing Stones inside, with a corpse inside!
Where to buy Tier 6 Somber Smithing Stones?
We’re starting to get into truly rare gems with less and less options beyond the farming methods outlined below. Most of the level 6 Gems we know of are found underground, in areas such as Noxtella and the Deep Root Depths, but they are difficult to reach, especially if you are not following the Elden Ring Ranni questline and its secret ending. We’ve listed the easiest for you above – but “easy” is starting to get pretty relative as a term.
- First Gelmir Mountain Campground – Just south of this area of Grace is a body in a chair with a wolf next to it. Loot the corpse for the Stone you need.
- Old Altus Tunnel – There are two separate Stones inside this dungeon, both next to different storage huts in the main room.
- Volkan Mansion – Not the mansion itself, but the fiery village dungeon behind it – here you will find a fountain surrounded by burning lava slugs. Loot the corpse piled on the fountain for stone.
Where to buy Tier 7 Somber Smithing Stones?
You’ll need to reach areas late in the game at this point, and although early Somber Stones are usually found during exploration, most levels this level and above are small rewards for clearing difficult areas or killing mini-bosses. There are several options to check out – Nokstella is particularly fertile ground for levels 7, but it’s also pretty deadly and hard to reach. Here are some easier, gentler options.
- Dungeater’s Cell (Underground Escape Area) – Outside the Dung Eater’s cell under Leyndell, there are numerous hand spiders, aka “Fingercrawlers”. These actually have a (small) chance to drop a level 7 Somber Stone and can therefore be planted with patience.
- Inside the Giant Skull – South of the Golden Seed tree that connects the Forbidden Lands between Leyndell and the Grand Lift of Rold, there is a giant skull with a corpse on one of its teeth. Loot the corpse to get the stone.
- East of the Zamor Ruins – After reaching Zamor Ruins, take the main road and you will see a Teardrop Scarab clinging to a tree. Kill for the Somber Stone.
Where to buy Tier 8 Somber Smithing Stones?
We are nearing the end of the upgrade line and your weapons will be approaching their maximum power. The only problem is that you’ll have to explore difficult areas late in the game to get Level 8 Gems – the Mountaintops of the Giants, the Shattered Farum Azula, and even the Blessed Snowfield (if you’re not sure how to get there). Check out our page on how to get to the Consecrated Snowfield in Elden Ring). Here are a few options for getting Somber Smithing Stones [8].
- forge foot – There is a huge teleporting Scarab in this area that drops a Level 8 Stone when killed. Be careful – it explodes at the moment of death!
- Ancient Snow Valley Ruins – There is another Tear Scarab in the lower part of the valley, south of the Blessing Realm. Kill for stone.
- Blessed Snowfield Little Erdtree – Just west of this Tree, there is another Scarab on some rocks. Cut it for a third Stone.
Where to buy Tier 9 Somber Smithing Stones?
Unless you plan on burning the uniquely rare Gloomy Ancient Dragon Mooring Stones in your custom weapons, it’s possible in the Elden Ring. You should definitely be late game for these, and while there are a few spots around Snowfields and Haligtree, it’s (mostly) easier to go to Crumbling Farum Azula to get what you need, so we’ll focus on that. .
- Southwest Cliffs – In Grace of Crumbling Beast Burial Depths, take the elevator on the southwest side of the building and you will see a corpse under a tree. Loot for level 9 Somber Stone.
- Dragon Temple – Actually, there are two level 9 stones in different places here: one just before jumping into the Dragon Shrine; You will see some ruins with an item under an angled pillar. The other was found at the lowest level of the temple, going west through the Grace Zone and following the path of the floating stones and reaching a plunderable corpse between two pillars from a tomb.
- North of the Dragon Shrine – When you go through the Temple from the north exit, follow the path on the left and cross the closed corridor with the Dragon Statues and the curved stone stairs. Head up the stairs to an area with fallen pillars and a door for the Elden Ring Stonesword Keys – The Stone doesn’t go past the Imp door, but is on a corpse piled behind a fallen pillar in front of you (watch out for attacking monsters).
It is actually possible to farm every single level of the Somber Smithing Stone and safely in Elden Ring. While there may seem like a (very small) chance for enemies to drop Iron Stones in some late-games, it’s much easier to find all Elden Ring Bell Bearing locations because you can then return them to Twin Finger Shells in Roundtable Hold and hits 1-9. You will be able to buy endless Somber Smithing Stones from levels! Admittedly, it’s not all cheap, but if you’re short of cash, you can always head to one of our Elden Ring Rune breeding sites and craft great Runes with very little effort.
