What do Game Boy and sewing machines have in common?

In the early 2000s, the Nintendoknown for its innovative and bold ideas, surprised the world by establishing an unlikely partnership with Jaguar to create something unique: sewing machines compatible with the GameBoy via Link Cable.

This collaboration is today remembered as one of the most peculiar in Big N’s history.

This is the least known Game Boy accessory

The first collaboration resulted in the Nu-Yell JN-100, a sewing machine developed by Jaguar International Corporation. Interestingly, the machine did not come with a Game Boy, assuming that most Japanese homes already had one.

The JN-100 had a dedicated compartment to fit the GameBoyconnecting them via Link Cable.

Instead of pre-programmed sewing patterns, users could simply insert a cartridge into the console and choose the desired pattern.

This innovative approach transformed sewing into a more interactive and fun experience.

The success was so significant that the American company Singer launched the Singer IZEK 1500, replicating the benefits of the Japanese machine. In 2001, Jaguar launched the JN-2000 model, faster and more precise than its predecessor.

The blog that cataloged these rarities reveals that each machine cost between 150 and 250 dollars, not including accessories.

There were also five different types of cartridges available, such as ‘Raku x Raku Mishin’, ‘Raku x Raku Moji’, ‘Raku x Raku Cut Shuu’ and ‘Jaguar Mishin Sashi Senyou Soft: Mario Family’, in addition to the European version.

Each cartridge offered distinct sewing patterns, from Japanese (katakana, kanji, hiragana) and Latin characters to designs such as flowers, aircraft and animals.

Surprisingly, the last cartridge featured designs of the series’ beloved characters Marioproviding users with a truly unique and personalized sewing experience.
