Virtual game ‘Roblox’ serves as bait for scams; learn how to identify them

‘Roblox’ represents a unique gaming platform made up of ‘Experiences’. In this environment, players have the opportunity to interact with each other and the surrounding scenery.

The distinctive feature of the ‘Roblox‘ is that anyone can be a creator responsible for building the scenarios, defining the game logic, creating items and establishing the general interactivity of the experience.

The platform is free to access, but features an in-app currency called ‘robux’, used to purchase clothes, weapons and other items for the user’s avatar.

Some of these items have limited quantities and can reach significant values, reaching thousands of dollars.

Additionally, items can be exchanged between users or converted to in-game currency through an integrated trading system. This is where criminals take advantage.

‘Roblox’ is used as bait for scams

Although trading with real money is prohibited by the terms of service, some users choose to transact off-platform with real money, thus creating a potentially lucrative market.

In environments conducive to profits, like ‘Roblox’, unfortunately, users appear willing to deceive other people.

They are known as “beamers”, scammers specialized in scamming virtual game users, who seek to steal valuable items or robux from other players.

These criminals see gambling as a alternative interesting, since the target audience is teenagers under 13 years of age.

This means that many users are not aware of scam attempts. Therefore, they can easily fall for a well-executed scam by criminals.

How to identify scam attempts?

To be aware of scammers’ persuasive attempts, here are three most common ways they employ scams.

free robux

In a common tactic, fraudsters develop malicious experiments that promise to deliver free Robux.

To do this, they ask the victim to fill out a form with their username and password.

Tragically, the credentials provided by the victim are forwarded to a server controlled by the attacker, granting access to the user’s account. This access makes it easier to steal all the robux and valuable items present in the victim’s account.

Exchanges

Scammers apply a deceptive strategy when approaching the victim with two negotiation proposals. In one of these, the victim benefits, while in the other, the scammer wins.

The cybercriminal imposes the condition that the victim must accept both negotiations or reject them together.

However, during the conversation, the fraudster discreetly removes some robux from the victim’s account, resulting in the exchange that would benefit the victim failing due to the lack of robux in the scammer’s account.

Virus

Scammers take a direct approach, tricking the victim into installing software or browser extensions under the promise of getting free Robux or contributing to some specific development of interest to the victim.

However, the software suggested is, in reality, malware designed to capture the victim’s session ID.

This data allows the scammer to access the platform logged into the victim’s account and steal the items and robux associated with the compromised account.
