Two horror games will be turned into films

Hollywood is aware of the potential of horror games to inspire films. Recently, it was announced that two titles of the genre, ‘Until Dawn” and “Martha Is Dead’, will be turned into feature films.

‘Until Dawn’, a 2015 game, offers an immersive experience where eight friends are trapped in a mountainous refuge, facing supernatural threats.

The adaptation, under the direction of David F. Sandberg, promises to be a faithful approach to the horror visceral aspect of the game.

The film’s script, initially written by Blair Butler from ‘Cursed Invitation’, was reviewed by Gary Dauberman, who has ‘It’ and ‘Annabelle 3: Back Home’ on his CV.

Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions are producing. Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere, who brought the characters to life in the game, may appear in the film.

The work is described as a ‘love letter’ to the horror genre and will be aimed at an adult audience.

The ‘Until Dawn’ adaptation is part of a series of projects from PlayStation Productions to bring its franchises to film and television, following in the footsteps of other successful adaptations such as HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ and ‘Twisted Metal’.

‘Martha Is Dead’

‘Martha Is Dead’ is a more recent release, from 2022. Set in Tuscany during the Second World War, it tells the story of Giulia, a twin who assumes the identity of her deceased sister, Martha.

The adaptation will be a collaboration between Studios Extraordinares and LKA, with a script adapted by David Kajganich.

Anya Taylor-Joy, known for her roles in ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ and ‘The Witch’, is considered for the lead role. Check out the trailer:

Such adaptations of Sony are aligned with a larger movement in the industry, in which other companies, such as Nintendo and Microsoft, invest to bring their game franchises to other media.
