Last Thursday (25), a new game in the Lord of the Rings franchise was released. “The Lord of the Rings: Gollum” tells the original story of Gollum’s journey to escape Mordor in search of his precious ring of power.
The game is inspired by the books of JRR Tolkien and features characters that are very popular with the public, such as Gandalf the Grey.
As Gollum is not a warrior, the game’s gameplay is centered on stealth. The protagonist lives a constant duality between his personalities: the cunning Gollum and the innocent Sméagol.
In light of this, the game features a choice system that is based on the decisions each of these personalities would make. This adds layers of complexity to the narrative, making the story even more interesting.
The game is available for PS5 and PS4, selling for R$299.90. For Xbox Series X, Xbox One for R$222.45; and also for PC, on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG for just R$150.99.
There are plans for a version for Nintendo Switch, which will be released later this year.
‘The Lord of the Rings: Gollum’ is getting a lot of criticism
The game quickly became the worst-reviewed game of 2023. The newspaper The Guardian assigned a new 1/5 to the release, describing it as:
“Derivative, uninteresting, and essentially a broken stealth action adventure.”
The website PushSquare awarded a score of 2/10 and criticized the following:
“Outdated level design, clunky controls, dull graphics, and a lack of polish.”
In this sense, the PCGamesN gave a rating of 3/10. According to the portal:
“Repetitive gameplay and poorly constructed narrative are some of the main problems for such a low rating.”
Finally, the GameSpot also gave a score of 2/10 and pointed out that:
“Completing the game was an experience filled with setbacks, impossible odds, and ever-increasing levels of madness, and it was doomed from the start.”
