The best Valheim armor and how to make it

Need the best Valheim armor to protect you against Skeletons, Fulings and Trolls? With the right supplies, you’ll be well protected against the hostile environment of Valheim, whether in the Meadows or the Plains.

Naturally, some Valheim armor sets are much more efficient than others, especially since some of them come with special bonuses. Valheim Troll armor

The Valheim Troll Armor set is the best light armor set you can wear in Valheim. Its base armor provides adequate protection for the Meadows and Black Forest biomes and does not come with a movement penalty.

The biggest advantage of the Valheim’s Troll Armor set is the sneak bonus though. This bonus is very useful for gathering resources or dealing backstab damage in dangerous biomes.

These are the Valheim Troll Armor full set stats:

• 19 armor
• + 25% sneak (if wearing all four pieces)

As you can imagine, you need to hunt Trolls to get Troll Armor. If you have a good bow, you can get this armor set even before you defeat the first Valheim boss. You can find Trolls roaming in the Black Forest biome or inside Troll caves. They are not as common as Greydwarfs, but are fairly easy to spot thanks to their size. You also need some Skeletons for bone fragments.

Requirements to craft the full Valheim Troll Armor set:

• 25 troll hiding
• 13 bone fragments

Valheim Bronze armor

The Valheim Bronze Armor set isn’t one of the best in the game. However, it provides better protection than the Troll Armor set and is relatively easy to do after you defeat the first boss.

Here are the key stats for the full Valheim Bronze Armor set:

• 24 armor
• -10% movement speed
• no cape

You can start this armor set immediately after defeating Eikthyr. If you can’t find the recipe yet, don’t worry; not visible until you create bronze for the first time. It takes 2 parts copper and 1 part tin to make 1 part bronze.

Copper and tin are relatively easy to find; Walk through the Black Forest until you find one of the large pieces of copper ore. Tin ore is found in the same biome, but in smaller chunks and often near water. You need a Foundry to craft raw resources.

To craft the Valheim Bronze Armor set, you need the following items:

• 15 bronze (30 copper and 15 tin)
• 6 deerskin

Valheim Root armor

Valheim Root Armor has the same base stats as Bronze Armor. However, it is much better if you are carrying a bow and not against enemies with fire. The movement penalty is much less and you get a few bonuses. Of course, this armor is much more situational. Here’s an overview of Root Armor’s (long) list of stats and effects:

• 24 armor
• +15 bow skill (if wearing full set)
• Increased resistance to puncture damage (harnesk only)
• Increased resistance to poison damage (mask only)
• -4% movement speed
• Weak to fire damage
• no cape

While Root Armor is actually better than Bronze Armor considering its bonuses, it is much harder to craft. You need lots of Roots dropped by Abominations; Giant tree monsters in the swamp (added in January and House update). Other materials, old bark (swamp trees) and leather should not take too long.

Here is the full list of Root Armor crafting materials:

• 30 roots
• 30 ancient bark
• 4 deerskin
• 4 leather scraps

Valheim Iron armor

After defeating Valheim’s third boss, Bonemass, it’s time to craft a new armor set: Valheim Iron Armor. This armor is very similar to the Bronze armor set, but stronger. Take a look at the Valheim Iron Armor stats for comparison:

• 42 armor
• -10% movement speed
• no cape

The recipes for the Iron Armor set are automatically unlocked by crafting Iron for the first time. You only need Scrap Iron and a Foundry. Scrap iron is found in the ‘Muddy Scrap Pile’ inside the Sunken Vaults in the Swamp biome. You can access these vaults using the Swamp Key left by Valheim’s second boss, The Elder.

For those who are a little more advanced in the game; If you have a Wishbone dropped by Valheim’s third boss (Bonemass), the iron isn’t all that hard to find in the wild. This Wishbone will notify you when you approach buried Muddy Scrap Pile.

Requirements to craft the full Valheim Iron Armor set:

• 60 iron
• 6 deerskin

Valheim Wolf armor

The Valheim Wolf Armor set is undoubtedly one of the best looking armors in Valheim. It’s also one of the most useful as it allows you to stay in the snowy Mountain biome without taking Frost damage.

At first glance, Wolf Armor may seem weaker than Iron Armor. Note, however, that the 41 base armors are without helmets. When equipped with the full armor set plus a separate helmet, the Wolf Armor set is actually slightly stronger.

• Freeze Resistant
• -20% movement speed
• no helmet

Making Wolf Armor will take a lot of Wolf and silver. You’ll need to get some Frost Resistance Mead first, as both are only available in the Mountain biome. This will protect you against the cold for 10 minutes, so it’s best to bring more than one.

Chain is the only resource available in the Swamp biome. Dropped by Wraiths, blue ghost-like creatures.

Requirements to craft the full Wolf Armor set:

• 44 silver
• 16 wolf skins
• 4 teeth
• 1 chain
• 1 wolf reward

Valheim Drake helmet

Wolf Armor may look great, but it’s missing one important thing: the helmet. The Valheim Drake Helmet is the perfect headgear to match the set. It is the second best helmet in the game, surpassed only by the Padded Helmet. Just take a look at the Valheim Drake Helmet base armor stat:

• 20 armor
• Not part of a set

To get the Drake Helmet, go back to the Mountain biome and start hunting Drakes. They are flying creatures so be sure to take a ranged weapon with you. If you want to keep them from flying away, the Abyssal Harpoon will be of great help.

Requirements to craft the Valheim Drake Helmet:

• 2 Drake cups
• 20 silver
• 2 wolf skins

Valheim Padded Armor

The name may not sound all that impressive, but Valheim Padded Armor is by far the most powerful armor set in Valheim. Moreover, there is no high movement penalty at all:

• 78 armor
• -10% movement speed
• no cape

The recipes for Valheim’s Padded Armor set are surprisingly simple. You can obtain iron by exploring Sunken Vaults or using the Wishbone, as described in the Iron Armor set. Then comes the hard part: Linen. First you need a Spinning Wheel obtained by defeating Valheim’s fourth boss Moder. Then gather Flax from the Plains biome and you can craft Linen Yarn.

Requirements to craft the Fully Charged Armor set:

• 30 iron
• 55 linen yarn

Valheim Dverger Circle

This piece of Valheim armor is not worn for protection, but stands out for its usefulness. The Valheim Dverger Circlet shines a light on the area before you, perfect for night exploration and dungeons. You can buy it from Trader Haldor (a blue-skinned dwarf with a red beard) for 620 Gold. Haldor only appears in the Black Forest biome.
