Valve has long wanted to create a diverse ecosystem of gaming devices powered by SteamOS, and the company will finally be getting help from one of its competitors.
Valve designer Lawrence Yang recently announced in an interview with The Verge that the ROG Ally will soon be receiving an update that will allow it to use the same operating system as the Steam Deck. The announcement comes after eagle-eyed users noticed an intriguing line in Valve’s latest SteamOS patch notes: “Added support for extra ROG Ally keys.”
Today, Valve seems to be returning to its original dream, but with a modern twist focused on portable gaming. But, It’s worth noting that this doesn’t mean the ROG Ally will ship with SteamOS anytime soon.There are reasons why Asus is sticking with Windows, including Microsoft’s robust validation process for various hardware configurations.
For Valve, it’s not just about supporting competing hardware. The company is also working on a public version of SteamOS 3 for non-portable PCs, but as with laptop support, it’s not ready for release yet.
Interestingly, Valve isn’t the only one going down this path. Another player in the industry, Universal Blue, has already announced support for the Asus ROG Ally X with its Bazzite operating system.
