Conflicts between players and licenses are not new. Ever since video games have existed or almost existed, fans around the world have been debating to pick the best epic, best title, real GOTY, and other things without really taking into account the importance of subjectivity. But faced with time and the proliferation of games and genres, such discourse gradually became more cautious, recognizing that it was purely a matter of taste.
And then… Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3. Let it be said, 2023 is a great year for the RPG. While some would argue that this isn’t really an RPG, after Final Fantasy XVI, which is another topic of discussion, fans of the genre now await the release of the next two giants of the genre. On the one hand, Starfield is a new license from Bethesda, the undisputed master of Western RPGs, and on the other, the newborn Baldur’s Gate 3 of the greatest CRPG saga in history.
Gamers reconnect with their old demons with the release of Starfield and Baldur’s Gate 3
Inevitably, such promises are enough to get into the minds of some. All you have to do to spot the disaster is do a quick search on Twitter for “Starfield Baldur’s Gate 3”. Dozens of tweets trying to explain with 1+B why one title would be better than the other. In a camp, we don’t care about Starfield’s load times and (most likely) bugs.
In the other, Baldur’s Gate 3 is called antiquity desperate to foreground a supposedly bygone RPG subgenre. Of course, consoles play an important role: If the two games come out on PC, Starfield will also be on the Xbox Series, while Baldur’s Gate 3 opted for the PS5.
So let’s make it clear here again: it’s all just a matter of taste. Everyone will be able to find their account in one of the games without affecting the quality of the other. In short, tastes and colors.
