For a surprise, it’s a surprise! Swedish group Embracer announced that it has acquired Western studios from Square Enix. and any licenses that come with it. It’s an important transaction for the world of video games, worth just $300 million.
Square Enix, which invested in Western video games a few years ago, is therefore selling all its non-Japanese studios for a penny. More than talent Embracer received multiple licensesmore than fifty, some of which are very prestigious.
Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, flagship licenses included in the deal
Embracer thus gets licenses that are very popular among players. Like Deus Ex or Tomb Raider, still in use today (a new Tomb Raider is being prepared). There are also games in the lot that are disappearing from the landscape but have a certain aura with older players. We’re considering Thief or Legacy of Kain. For now, nothing says they’ll be back, but Embracer does. All you have to do is cross your fingers. Note that Square Enix still retains some attractive Western licenses like Outriders, Life is Strange, or Just Cause.
What surprises are good here the amount of the transaction. 300 million dollars, It looks like straw when you look at the finishing in the middle. Especially Activision-Blizzard, which Microsoft bought for about 70 billion dollars. Square Enix’s Western games certainly never really reached stratospheric sales, but 300 million is still very low. We almost feel like Square wanted to get rid of western studios. No doubt we’ll find out behind the scenes of the takeover in the coming days or weeks.
That’s why Embracer will continue to operate the acquired studios and why not give them a new impetus. Anyway, the Swedish group is becoming an increasingly important video game giant. As a reminder, he already owns THQ Nordic, Koch Media or Gearbox. Today’s redemption must be completed For the end of summer 2022.
