Nintendo is one of the largest and most famous video game companies in the world. It is responsible for major successful titles in the gaming world, such as “Super Mario Bros.”, “The Legend of Zelda” and “Donkey Kong”, as well as many others that are just as iconic.
The Japanese giant is still very successful with its launches of different consoles. The brand’s most popular and recent console is the famous Nintendo Switch, which has a portable and easy-to-use system.
However, although it was very successful when it was launched, it seems that it no longer brings in large profits for the company.
Nintendo Switch sales drop
According to the company’s recent financial report, which covers sales from April 2022 to March 2023, there was a significant drop in Switch sales. Thus, they did not even reach the forecasts and targets.
Nintendo President, Shuntaro Furukawapredicts a continuation of the decline in console sales for the fiscal year, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024.
This comes after a 22% drop in the previous fiscal year, in which they sold around 17.9 million consoles. They had expected to reach 21 million sales, but they updated that forecast to 18 million possibly after market research.
Furukawa also revealed that 15 million units are expected to be sold this year, but that it may be difficult to maintain sales momentum, as this is the seventh year of the Switch’s release. He further states:
“Our target of 15 million units for this year is a bit ambitious. But we will do our best to increase demand for Christmas.”
Therefore, it is likely that the big company will have some planning until the end of the year, being able to bet on its successful games. Or even on its new game, which is scheduled for release today (12), “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”.
No more consoles this year
Shuntaro also stated that, until April 2024, they will not launch any hardware, whether it is a new product or just a new, more updated version of the current Nintendo Switch, diverting any launch and leaving it out of this fiscal year.
