PS5: Sony is working on a function that pauses the game when you release DualSense

In recent years, numerous patent applications have been filed by Sony to protect sometimes eccentric concepts. For example, we remember these revolutionary reruns of What If on Disney+. The idea was to replay players’ games in different scenarios.

In January 2022, the Japanese firm also filed a patent application for a coaching system that could explain to players mistakes made during the game. But our colleagues from TechRadar have just discovered the existence of another patent application from the manufacturer.

Filed in 2021 and released on November 3, 2022, This patent is a new “method to detect an inactive gamepad”. The motion sensors on the DualSense are combined with other technologies, such as microphone or camera images, to allow the PS5 to detect when the player poses the DualSense, the documents said.

DualSense will know you’re no longer there to play

If the controller is detected as inactive, the console may therefore automatically pause the game. Practical, for example, if you need to leave your seat in a hurry to get a package under your building, or if you have a very urgent request. As mentioned above, this patent therefore proposes that the controller can detect whether you are still playing or not, based specifically on the information provided by the microphone or camera.

While this dataset will certainly allow the controller to determine an approximate position of the player, this practice raises some concerns, especially in terms of data security and privacy.. Another point is that the idea put forward in this patent does not seem to have achieved a complete agreement among the players, it is far from it.

As a matter of fact, many players reacted to the news on the ResetEra forum. For some people, Sony needs to focus on other prioritiesespecially Increased battery life of DualSense. “I change positions to relax and the game randomly pauses? No thanks”, a user claims. However, as with every patent, there’s nothing to say that Sony will decide to deploy this feature to DualSense at some point.
