The first quarter of 2023 was extremely positive for the PlayStation 5 console. This is because, after replacing units, it was possible to reach more than 38 million sales worldwide.
However, not all of Sony’s numbers are increasing, as compared to recent years, video game sales are declining.
This information is in PlayStation’s annual report, which presents the company’s numbers. In 2022, the number of sales of PS4 and PS5 consoles decreased to 13% compared to 2021.
In 2021, the company sold around 303.2 million units. In 2022, they sold 264.2 million units, which is a negative figure for the company.
Why is PlayStation selling less?

Apparently, the decrease in sales of consoles and games is closely related to the increase in video game prices in recent years.
In this sense, journalist Derek Strickland analyzed the situation for Tweakdown and noted that, even though PlayStation made a profit of $2.387 million in the third quarter of 2022, game sales decreased by $6.2 million.
A good example of this is the game “Modern Warfare 2”, which sold billions of dollars, but did not reach a significant number of copies sold to cover the costs of developing the game.
Thus, according to the journalist’s analysis, even though users continue to use the PlayStation, the high price of games, which can reach US$70, is pushing them away from purchasing titles.
Therefore, the decrease in sales of games for the PS5 could have a negative impact on the company. According to Derek, increasing the price to $70 could benefit PlayStation Plus subscriptions. However, the number of subscribers is not showing a preference for this system.
In this way, it is possible to observe that the decisions made by PlayStation are affecting sales and show that players’ opinions are influenced by price to the detriment of the quality of the titles.
