These Pokemon Go Zapdos counters will help you defeat this Legendary Bird in raids. Pokemon from the Kanto region are back for Pokemon Go trainers to fight and catch.
This mighty Pokemon has seen a lot of success on teams in mainline Pokemon games, but it has a lot of use in Pokemon Go as well, especially against the way countless Flying and Water-type Pokemon trainers will face it.
But catching Zapdos in Pokemon Go is not that easy. In fact, trainers will need to have certain types of Pokemon with certain moves to get past the unique Electric and Flying spelling. This is where we come in. This time, Zapdos will appear in Raids starting Thursday, July 7th at 10:00 am local time until Thursday, July 14th at 10:00 am local time.
This guide will help trainers learn everything there is to know about Zapdos in Pokemon Go and which Pokemon is the best counter for it.
Pokemon Go Zapdos move set
Medicine: Electric/Flying
weaknesses: Ice/Rock
Resistors: Ground/Fighting/Steel/Grass/Insect/Flying
Time-lapse Weather: Windy/Rainy
100% IVs: 2015 CP (L20) / 2519 CP (L25)
Zapdos is a dual Electric/Flying type and therefore has both types of moves, among others.
Charge Beam is his only Quick Attack – although trainers can teach Thunder Shock with an Elite Fast TM – and it’s an Electric-type attack. This means trainers need to put Ground, Dragon, and Grass types into battle against it as they will resist this move.
As for Zapdos’ Charged Attacks, Legendary has three different Electric type moves in Zap Cannon, Thunderbolt and Thunder. Again, Ground, Dragon, Grass, and other Electric types do well to resist these moves.
Drill Peck is Zapdos’ only Flying-type attack, making it less than ideal for using Grass-types, while Ancient Power is a Rock move that causes problems for Ice-types.
Here are all the moves Zapdos can use in Pokemon Go.
Quick Moves | Loaded Movements |
---|---|
Charge Beam | Bump Ball |
Lightning | |
Thunder | |
Ancient Power | |

Pokemon Go Zapdos counters
Being Electric and Flying type only gives Zapdos a weakness against Ice and Rock type attacks. While Ice types can be very successful against Zapdos, they usually have a secondary type like Water that is weak against Electric moves. However, sometimes it’s a risk, trainers should consider, especially if they have strongs like Mega Abomasnow, Weavile, and Mamoswine.
Mega Abomasnow should be the foundation of an Ice team battling against Zapdos. The secondary Grass spell grants him resistance to Zapdos’ Electric moves. However, it is weak against Ancient Power and Drill Peck, so be wary of these attacks.
Mamoswine’s secondary Downgrade grants her resistance to Electric attacks and is not weak to any of Zapdos’ moves. Weavile, on the other hand, is weak against the Ancient Power, so be careful when entering battle against Zapdos using the Ice and Dark type.
If you’re a coach fighting a Rock team, the Mega Aerodactyl is an interesting choice. While her secondary Fly typing weakens her against Electric moves, your team’s ability to boost Rock moves is too good to miss.
Rhyperior, Rampardos, Gigalith, and Alolan Golem all have Rock moves to deal a ton of damage, and Zapdos doesn’t have any weaknesses in his moves.
Here is a list of great options for Zapdos counters in Pokemon Go.

How to get shiny Zapdos in Pokemon Go
Shiny Zapdos is available for lucky trainers who encounter it after defeating the Zapdos Raid. The coloring isn’t much different, in fact, Shiny Zapdos have a slightly more orange hue, but trainers will need to refer to the Shiny mark next to their name to make sure what they’re encountering is a Shiny.
There is no way to guarantee Shiny Zapdos, but trainers can enjoy a special Raid Hour that will give them a good chance on July 13 from 6pm to 7pm local time. During this hour, all Raids in Pokemon Go will be filled with Zapdos. Trainers will be able to fight as many battles as possible as long as they have the Raid Pass, and each battle won gives a chance to encounter a Shiny Zapdos.
