I know you’re still hoping, but Starfield isn’t on PS4 or PS5. Despite being announced before Microsoft bought Bethesda and having a large ‘nobody knows’ window, the game is very resolutely a PC and Xbox exclusive and we have receipts – Xbox, Bethesda and even Todd Howard were very clear on how. Starfield is not coming to PS5 or PS4.
Starfield PS5 or PS4 not an option
It’s easy to see where the confusion comes from. As we mentioned, Starfield was announced before Microsoft acquired Bethesda and was likely targeting multiple platforms at that point. But post-acquisition, the game’s future was clearly unclear, and even PlayStation boss Jim Ryan wasn’t sure to start by saying “it’s out of our hands, we’ll just wait” to have Starfield on PS4 or PS5. and see what happens”.
As things settled down, Bethesda’s Pete Hines said, “There are Xbox brands on other platforms. Minecraft ceased to exist in anything when Mojang was acquired by Microsoft. ‘I’ll never be able to play anything on PlayStation again'”. Many took this to suggest that Starfield might still have a chance on PlayStation. However, Xbox marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg quickly closed the conversation, saying “Starfield will only be released on Xbox Series X|S and PC.”
While many PS4 and PS5 owners are constantly looking for a clue this may be some kind of specific timing, Xbox is clear that this will never happen. Todd Howard even talked about how limiting the platform would make it a better game, saying, “You don’t want to leave people out, do you? But at the end of the day, you have the ability to focus and say that’s the game. Those are the platforms I want to build on, and being able to really stand up to them will make a better product.”
What will probably upset Starfield PS4 and PS5 fans the most were rumors that Sony was negotiating for Starfield exclusivity in the months before Microsoft stepped in and bought the entire company. At this point the opportunity is obviously long gone, so if you want to play Starfield, Xbox and PC are now your only options.
