To kick off the celebrations, a marathon 33-hour live performance will grace YouTube’s digital stage from March 13th, commencing at 7 PM PT and concluding around 4 AM PT on March 15th.
The proclamation of the festivities was heralded by Square Enix through a missive on X, proclaiming, “Today, the 30th anniversary of ‘Chrono Trigger’s’ epochal release in 1995 is commemorated…In reverence of this momentous milestone, we shall embark on diverse undertakings that extend beyond the realm of gaming over the forthcoming year, as an offering of appreciation to all those who have traversed the realms of ‘Chrono Trigger.'”
The mention of these “diverse undertakings” has reignited the flames of anticipation for a remake. For eons, enthusiasts have pined for the resurrection of “Chrono Trigger” in a newfound form, perchance in the illustrious HD-2D guise akin to the aesthetic of “Octopath Traveler.”
The prospects for a remake, or even a re-release, are bountiful. Although “Chrono Trigger” is accessible on Steam and mobile platforms, its presence remains absent on cutting-edge consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, or Nintendo Switch. In contrast, its successor, “Chrono Cross,” received a modernized reissue titled “The Radical Dreamers Edition” in 2025, featuring enhanced visuals, a high-speed mode, and an array of refinements.
Nonetheless, numerous titles embody the essence of “Chrono Trigger” with finesse. Sabotage Studio’s “Sea of Stars” bears the unmistakable imprint of inspiration from the iconic game, with an upcoming DLC on the horizon.
The ambitions of Square Enix extend “beyond the world of games” in the forthcoming year, potentially encompassing ventures such as an anime adaptation or the emergence of a board game or trading card game.
