Sony Reaffirms Consoles as Core Business Despite PC Success

Sony’s Continued Commitment to Consoles Amid PC Success

In a recent interview with Japanese publication Nikkei, Hideaki Nishino, head of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, emphasized that while Sony has seen success in publishing its first-party PlayStation 5 games to PC, the company’s primary focus remains on consoles. Nishino made it clear that consoles will continue to be at the core of Sony’s business, with PC gaming serving as a complementary avenue to reach a broader audience.

Nishino highlighted the convenience and simplicity of consoles compared to PC gaming, noting the streamlined process of installing and purchasing games through native console stores. Despite the advantages of consoles, Sony recognizes the importance of developing content for PCs to expand its share of the overall game market and connect with a wider range of players.

The company’s strategy involves releasing AAA single-player games on PlayStation first, followed by PC launches. Simultaneously, live-service titles like Helldivers 2 and Concord will be available on both PlayStation 5 and PC, aiming to attract players across different platforms.

Sony’s recent announcement of the PlayStation 5 Pro further emphasizes its dedication to console gaming. With updates such as a larger GPU and a disc-less design, the PlayStation 5 Pro targets console players seeking top-tier performance. Priced at $700, this new offering caters to gamers who prioritize high frame rates, all while remaining more affordable than premium PC graphics cards.

Nishino’s leadership alongside co-CEO Hiroki Totoki, following Jim Ryan’s departure, signifies Sony’s commitment to innovation in the console gaming industry. As the company continues to evolve its gaming platforms and explore new opportunities, the essence of Sony’s gaming legacy remains rooted in the world of consoles.
