The cloud of suspicion looms over the company as two executives, along with seven other employees, have been detained following an internal investigation by NetEase. According to sources like Bloomberg Law and Chinese outlet Leifeng, the investigation centers on a staggering contract worth approximately 2 billion yuan ($278,506,000), involving the alleged misconduct of 27 suppliers. Yicai Global further reveals that these companies have now been placed on a blacklist due to their association with the scandal. The fallout from these revelations has already resulted in the departure of Xiang Lang, the former esports chief, and Jin Yuchen, the former head of marketing from NetEase. The fate of the other implicated employees remains uncertain, with conflicting reports on their status.
For years, NetEase Games has forged partnerships with Western game developers to bring popular titles to the Chinese audience. Collaborating with industry giants like Blizzard Entertainment, NetEase has localized games such as “Diablo Immortal,” “Overwatch,” and “World of Warcraft” for Chinese players.
