Devolver Digital, in a stunning turn of events, recently unveiled that three of its highly anticipated games will now be making their debut in the year 2025, all thanks to an awards show of all places. Yes, you read that correctly – an awards show.
The inaugural Devolver Delayed Awards has emerged as a novel tradition, a celebration of sorts, where the illustrious publisher behind the enchanting world of Cult of the Lamb takes the time to uplift and honor the tireless efforts of game developers whose creations have encountered unexpected detours along the path to fruition. This year’s triumphant recipients were none other than Baby Steps, Skate Story, and Stick It to the Stickman.
Surprisingly, many of these honored games did not possess concrete release dates that necessitated a postponement. For instance, Baby Steps made its grand entrance during IGN’s Summer of Gaming back in 2023, with a tentative 2024 unveiling on the horizon. On the flip side, Skate Story has traversed this road before, having been initially earmarked for a 2023 launch, only to be deferred to 2024 during last year’s Devolver Delayed showcase. Is this a case of history repeating itself, marking a first-ever two-time champion?
An emotional moment unfolded as an in memoriam segment paid tribute to the games that did, in fact, grace us with their presence this past year. Among those mentioned were Pepper Grinder, The Crush House, and Children of the Sun.
In a surprising twist, Devolver presented an award for a game that seems to exist solely in the realm of imagination. Volvy’s Adventure DX, a whimsical creation, was acknowledged during the ceremony, with Inscryption developer Daniel Mullins stepping up to receive the accolade. Mullins, in a moment of eloquence, expressed, “I didn’t conceive this game. I’m not even certain if it truly exists.”
Volvy, a whimsical classic game mascot in the elaborate tapestry of Devolver lore, has been cheekily inserted into various narratives and videos by the publisher. Last year, an elaborate clip even chronicled the faux development of the non-existent Volvy series, sparking both amusement and bewilderment. Perhaps, just perhaps, Volvy is more than a mere figment of our imaginations – a mystery waiting to unravel in the curious world of Devolver.
