Arkane Founder Slams Microsoft for Closure of Arkane Austin

In a tragic twist of fate, Raphael Colantonio, the esteemed president of Arkane Games prior to his departure in 2017, has spoken out against Microsoft’s closure of Arkane Austin earlier this year. With a heavy heart, he proclaimed that the decision to shutter the studio was, in his view, a misstep of significant proportions.

As the founder of Arkane in 1999, Colantonio has witnessed firsthand the incredible creativity and talent that once thrived within Arkane Austin. In an exclusive interview with PC Gamer, he lamented the loss of such a unique group of individuals, renowned for their ability to produce remarkable work time and time again. Despite the undeniable potential of the Austin branch, it was deemed expendable in the eyes of corporate decision-makers driven by financial pressures and stock market demands.

Colantonio’s legacy at Arkane includes the creation of the acclaimed horror immersive sim, “Prey,” a testament to the studio’s innovative game design prowess. However, the game’s commercial success fell short of expectations. Subsequently, Arkane Austin embarked on the ambitious project “Redfall,” which, unfortunately, met with critical and financial disappointment upon its release in 2023. Following the closure of Arkane Austin, Microsoft even went so far as to offer refunds to dissatisfied customers.

Undeterred by these setbacks, Colantonio embarked on a new endeavor, founding Wolfeye Studios in 2019. Currently, he is immersed in the development of an as-yet-untitled action RPG that promises to blend elements of Fallout with the beloved Dishonored series crafted by Arkane. Despite his absence during the closure of Arkane Austin, Colantonio remains steadfast in his belief that the unique synergy and magic created by the talented team can never be replicated.

In a heartfelt post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Colantonio reiterated his support for his former colleagues and friends impacted by the closure. He emphasized the irreplaceable nature of a team that captures lightning in a bottle, a phenomenon that cannot be manufactured through hasty rehiring practices. The closure of Arkane Austin stands as a somber reminder of the fragility of creative brilliance and the challenges faced by game development studios in an unforgiving industry.

While the closure of Arkane Austin marks the end of an era, Arkane Lyon continues to forge ahead, among the ranks of studios contributing to the highly anticipated Marvel game project “Marvel’s Blade,” still in its nascent stages of development. As the industry evolves and faces inevitable upheavals, the legacy of Arkane’s innovative spirit and Colantonio’s unwavering dedication to artistic integrity endure as beacons of inspiration for future generations of game developers.
