Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Insomniac Explains How Character Switching Works

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, arguably the most anticipated PS5 exclusive this year, made another notable appearance at PlayStation Showcase last week. Insomniac Games’ next game offered a 10-minute video that offers deep gameplay and a feature that makes a lot of noise: character switching.

Indeed, you are certainly aware that the next Spider-Man will be playing Peter Parker, as well as Miles Morales, who qualified for the spin-off when the PS5 was released. However, in the gameplay video stream, we see that the player moves from one to the other, especially fluidly, without the slightest transition and with a simple button press. So, can the character be changed at any time during the game?

Spider-Man 2 will be inspired by GTA 5 for character change

Since the PlayStation Showcase, many have been talking about a GTA V operation 10 years ago that allowed you to choose the character you want to embody in open world episodes. For Spider-Man 2 we will therefore find the same principle. However, the game’s creative director Bryan Intihar states in an interview with Eurogamer: “When you play the main story, we control when you go from Pete to Miles”to ensure a good continuity of narrative.

On the other hand, freedom will be much more in the open world. “We have content designed by Peter, content designed by Miles, and content that you can play both.“, explains Bryan Intihar. Even better: thanks to the power of PS5, transitions will be instantaneous, without loading times like in GTA V. “In the open world, you’ll be able to switch freely between them at the push of a button. »

Finally, the two heroes will each have their own skill tree and will share the third. “We saw in the gameplay video that Miles has Venom powers and Peter has Symbiote abilities. So it changes the way you play a bit and you can also raise them in their respective trees,” the creative director says.
