The Dying Light 2 coop mode and the ability to play online with your friends to help progress are a big draw of the game, allowing you to work together and park in groups on rooftops, jump over zombie heads and make electric beaters together. But how do you unlock cluster play in Dying Light 2, how many players can play co-op and what progression is available for different players working together?

When can you play coop in Dying Light 2?
The Dying Light 2 cluster mode is not unlocked from the start, but comes later when the intro is complete and the player completes a quest called “Markers of Plague” in roughly an hour or two depending on your pacing. The pause menu will show a big “Online Menu” option and this is what you click to start installing the online coop game.
How to play Dying Light 2 coop mode with your friends
Once you have completed the Markers of Plague quest and the Dying Light 2 set option is available, select it to open any online settings for you to play. You can invite up to three friends from your friend list or change your game server’s restrictions to one of the following four options:
- Single player: Only you and no one can join (default)
- People: Anyone can join
- Only friends: Anyone on your friend list can join
- Invite Only: You need to send an invitation to any player for them to join.
There’s also a Quick Join option that will deposit you to roam with a stranger in any random Public game, and if you select the Call for Help option at any point (which usually appears after you die), it basically sends a prompt. All your friends playing Dying Light 2, to join your game and help you through any challenge that beats you.
There are other things to note – players who die in the cluster can be resurrected by allies up to three times, assuming they reach them within 20 seconds, after which they will begin to respawn in nearby safe areas. There’s also a slight change to the dialogue system – only the home player can choose what’s said in the branching dialogue or choices, but other players can show their support for one option or the other.
Coop progression in Dying Light 2 explained
While this is being set up, what exactly is in the coop and what advancements are there in your own single player games? Well, it’s a bit complicated, but we’ll make it clear and simple below.
Regardless, certain rewards earned in the cluster are always retained when you return to single player. Experience, items, money, weapons – anything that is effectively tied to your inventory or Aiden’s abilities, which is perfect.
However, this does not apply to mission progression other than the home player. Therefore, if the host asks for help completing the Dying Light 2 Water Tower selection mission, and the three of them unite to help them secure it, when they get back to their own game, as the mission, only the home owner will have this victory under their belt. Progress seems to depend more on the world than on individual players. This means that when you come back to your own game, you’ll still have to do that Water Tower quest if you haven’t already done so. But hey, maybe you can get that friend of yours to help you this time? And at least, it won’t lock you into any of the Dying Light 2 endings without your consent.
