How to complete the Destiny 2 Gatekeeper of Basic Knowledge challenge in Vow of the Disciple

Complete the Destiny 2 Basics challenge as part of Vow of the Disciple’s Warden boss fight match to collect an extra Raid chest for even more loot. This encounter has a lot of moving parts as it stands, players need to stun the Warden while collecting symbols to enter a obelisk, so the Basic Knowledge challenge definitely makes things a little harder. However, with this guide, you’ll have everything you need to get you and your Raid team in the Destiny 2 Basics challenge in Vow of the Disciple’s Doorman encounter.

The Destiny 2 Base Information Raid challenge challenges your team to collect and enter obelisk symbols one at a time. If you’ve played the guard match before, you know that to collect the symbols, several players must enter a dark room. Typically, these players collect up to three and then work together to quickly draw all three on the obelisk, but for the challenge, they can only take one symbol per journey into the Darkroom. This challenge isn’t terribly difficult, but it definitely requires good management of the Spreading Darkness debuff to avoid deaths, and the awesome Warden stun to gain as much time as possible.

If one of the players collecting symbols accidentally gets a second symbol, you will immediately receive the message “Challenge failed” and you must clear it to give the encounter and challenge another chance. However, if you succeed in all levels of the Warden and then defeat him, there will be a bonus loot chest ready for you to open, giving you extra Vow of the Disciple gear.

Here are the very basic steps you need to know to complete the Caretaker’s Base Information Raid challenge in Vow of the Disciple:

  1. A player rushes into the dark symbol room, takes only one symbol, and then leaves.
  2. This player must hit the corresponding symbol on the obelisk after requesting a bid.
  3. The first player leaves the room to enter his symbol, while the second player runs to get his symbol, exits and then enters it into the obelisk.
  4. Meanwhile, two of the other four players will stun the Warden, and the other two will clear the enemies, keeping them away from the obelisk and stun players.
  5. Repeat the icon transfer until all nine obelisk icons are cleared to start the janitor damage phase.
  6. Repeat all this on each floor of the match, then defeat the Warden in the final standoff phase.

The Basics challenge doesn’t really add anything too complicated to the encounter, but it will slow everything down and require all players to perform their roles as precisely as possible. Stick to your usual uploads and make sure your communication is good. Also note that you will need to complete these steps for each floor of the boss fight, except for the ‘last stand’ phase at the end. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to run the Warden match to complete the Basic Knowledge challenge:

  1. In this encounter example, the team is split as follows: Players 1 and 2 are symbol collectors, Players 3 and 4 are Warden stunners, and Players 5 and 6 are clearing enemies.
  2. Player 1 will start the encounter by pressing the door and running into the Dark room – you gain stacks of Spreading Darkness debuffs while inside the Dark rooms, so speed is important.
  3. Player 1 will pick up the first symbol they see and run from the Dark room to the obelisk. It is very important for Player 2 to press the door button occasionally to keep the door open for Player 1 to make a smooth escape.
  4. The Obelisk will ask for an offer from Player 1, so they must find the symbol that matches what they got on the obelisk and hit it. It should light up orange and then the obelisk will accept the offer.
  5. At the same time, Player 2 will run into the Dark room to do the same – grab a symbol, exit the room, while Player 1 presses the button.
  6. Player 2 will now have to draw his symbol on the obelisk whenever a bid is requested and Player 1 will return to the Dark room to collect a symbol, etc.
  7. While this is happening, Players 3 and 4 will be responsible for stunning the Warden by hitting him in the face and back after performing a slam attack. These players must constantly stun the Warden to give Players 1 and 2 as much time as possible.
  8. Players 5 and 6 must destroy all of the Taken and Scorn enemies that appear to protect all other players. Eliminating Scorn Reduced Fans is particularly important as they will hit the obelisk and reduce the amount of time Players 1 and 2 have to enter all symbols.
  9. After players 1 and 2 have correctly entered all nine symbols on the obelisk and left them blank, the match will move into the damage phase.
  10. After the damage phase, go up to the next floor and repeat the process until you force the Gatekeeper to the final standdown phase. Here you must defeat the Warden, otherwise you will all be wiped out and have to start all over again, including the challenge.

While Basic Knowledge isn’t terribly difficult, it’s all too easy to fail in frustrating ways. Essentially, it can be pretty easy to accidentally pick up an extra symbol, especially in the first Darkroom, due to how tightly packed it is. Be careful as you run through each room and be careful not to get any corners too close to a symbol or a brush – use the symbols’ orange glow as a beacon to avoid space. You’ll also want to pay attention to the displacement of symbols in Darkrooms, as they seem to move after an obelisk symbol has been drawn. We failed a challenge attempt due to a symbol appearing right in front of a player while escaping the Darkroom, so be careful!

If you do all of these successfully, you will complete the encounter along with the Basic Knowledge challenge. Raid challenges change every week, and there’s one for the rest of the Vow of the Disciple encounters, right up to the final boss fight against Rhulk in the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge.
