The God of War Ragnarok water puzzle is solved by freezing the geysers in Svartalfheim by turning a wheel to change the pressure and clear the river and continue boating downstream. Beyond that, another gate includes blocks and some of the same principles at a more granular level. These puzzles aren’t the easiest to understand because these mechanics will be pretty new to the player, so we’ve prepared a basic how-to below in God of War Ragnarok waterwheel and geyser puzzle to clear the river gates. in Svartalfheim.
God of War Ragnarok waterwheel and geyser puzzle
The God of War Ragnarok waterwheel and geyser puzzle is based on an early reappearance mechanic in the Dwarven kingdom of Svartalfheim – when you freeze a geyser with a leviathan ax or find a way to shut it down, it increases the pressure and height of other geysers in the area. With this in mind, players can use this principle to spin the waterwheel and lower the gate that closes the river.
- Clear the enemy area.
- Immediately after leaving your boat, use the Blades of Chaos to open the cap of the geyser.
- Go to the right of the capless geyser and use the blades to climb the wooden platform into the higher abyss.
- Clear out the enemies that spawn here.
- Look again at the waterwheel – you can now see the high geyser floor as shown above.
- Throw the Leviathan ax into the high geyser to freeze it. This will increase the power of the capless one and make it propel the waterwheel.
- This allows you to continue by lowering the gorge that closes the river.
This idea of geysers will resurface in Svartalfheim, using them to trigger certain mechanisms. In fact, a particularly complex version of this idea soon emerges, with an even bigger door you’ll have to move blocks around to get through. Read on for help with this.
God of War Ragnarok river gate and block puzzle
Just downstream of the Svartalfheim river is a much more fortified gate that requires pulling two separate chains to open it. This puzzle also includes geysers, but this time the waterwheel has been replaced with giant metal blocks that will serve various functions along the way. Below we will explain the process for all of these.
- When your boat reaches the gate, turn right and follow the river to the shore to disembark.
- Follow the path to the large metal block past the ormr creep thing – throw your ax to cut the chain holding it there.
- Climb over the block and pull the first chain to start clearing the gate.
- Jump over the gap to your left and freeze the geyser to safely jump that too.
- Follow the stony left road and clear out the enemies along the way.
- At the end of the geyser, open the lid, then freeze again, without moving, what you jumped over before.
- This causes the block to fall on it.
- Quickly recall the ax and throw it on the chain as the block rises – you need to be quick to seize the opportunity.
- Climb the now cut iron block.
- While standing on it, throw your ax into the geyser you closed.
- This will freeze the geyser and push your block up.
- This will raise you to the next platform – with the second chain of doors on the right.
- Pull the chain to lower the door completely.
- Go down, jump back over the gap mentioned in step 4 and return to the boat to pass through the door and move forward.
With this, you can go further into the wetlands and start to truly open up the kingdom of Svartalfheim. I’m sure it will be much easier in the future, right…?
