The Sims 4 multiplayer is something that has been at the top of gamers’ wish lists for years, as it would be so much better to have real people you can visit and collaborate with as your virtual neighbors. EA has always supported the talented Sims communities created in each release, and although previous games have dealt with online elements, there is still no official way to connect neighborhoods in The Sims 4. That doesn’t mean it won’t always be the case, so here’s everything we know about EA’s plans for Sims 4 multiplayer, and thoughts on what we might see in the future.
What did EA say about The Sims 4 multiplayer?
If comments from EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson are any indication – and you should hope they are – one thing the company is considering is an online future. This statement is from the third quarter of EA’s FY2020 earnings call.
“As Maxis continues to think about The Sims for the next generation – cross-platforms and a cloud of neighborhood worlds – you must always imagine that we will stay true to our inspiration, our escape, our creativity, our personal growth, our motivations. Existing in The Sims Online many years ago. things like social interactions and the concept of competition – that they will begin to be a part of The Sims experience for years to come.
We are very excited. This is a game that really has no competition in its category to provide and fulfill those motivations for the players, and we consider tremendous growth opportunities for us over the next many years.”
There are always Sims 4 multiplayer modes
Always one step ahead, the Sims community has already created some serious mods to bring multiplayer to The Sims 4. The Sims 4 Multiplayer mode is designed to let you play with other people in real time on a local network. The mod basically uses a computer as a server, which allows two players to join the same game. It’s still in closed beta, but the developer has a patreon hopes to support the project and expand the mode to allow more than two players in the future.

Remember, this is not an official EA product, so you’ll want to be careful when downloading and installing it.
Sims Online
Some Sims players will remember The Sims Online, which was released for PC in December 2002. For a $9.99 monthly subscription fee, players essentially got a Sims MMO experience. Think of all the usual Sims games, but the other Sims are all real people. Career options were Restaurant, Robot Factory, DJ and Dance, but people also made money by buying and selling their homes or renting them out to others. In 2007 the game was renamed EA-Land and was permanently shut down in August 2008.
Sims multiplayer
The Sims Bustin’ Out was released for PS2, Xbox, Game Boy Advance and Nintendo GameCube in 2003 and featured multiplayer. The game was very different from the pure simulation of the classic series, offering an adventure-style narrative that saw a villain named Malcolm Landgraab steal goods from other Sims. Online Weekend mode allows players to use chat and work together in free play and story mode. The game’s server was shut down in August 2008.
